Can I simply do that on an existing and running installation, or will this mess up everything for me?
Earlier I’ve done apt update && upgrade which has resolved the unhealthy state and I’ve been able to update, but not from 2021.2.x to 2021.3.x. Are there any other trick I could use?

u can use the script.it’s safe.
and do not update hassio containers with something else than hassio itself or the script. (manual pull of container, watchtower …)
or your containers will lose ‘environnement’ or ‘labels’ settings
