Salt sentry: Water softener monitoring device

@ErikNL i just received mine and am trying to hook it up on a different platform (Homeseer). I’m severely visually impaired and not the brightest lightbulb in the room, so I need a little extra help. I have the device setup with my mqtt broker ip/port/topic and the dimensions for full and empty. The device shows up on my router table and is shown as a client in the mqtt plugin I’m using. The salt sentry device webpage shows mqtt status as connected. Where I’m lost, and forgive me as I’m totally new to mqtt and this is my first device using mqtt, is in the instructions (I know, it’s for home assistant but I thought it would be similar-ish) and creating devices for salt_sentry and salt_sentry_distance. I can’t figure out where in the mqtt broker/plugin settings to do this. A lot of this could be me as I use a screen reader and most all of this stuff is not fully compatible and does not get read aloud for me to understand. I messaged the mqtt plug-in dev on the Homeseer forum and he says that I need to setup esphome and link that to mqtt and the device. So, I’m totally confused here. I know I’m right there, like at the finish line, but just not getting it. Any chance that you, or anyone, could dumb this down enough for me to understand? I know it’s a different platform and all, but I’m hoping someone is familiar with it. Thank you for any assistance. I can’t wait to get this working! It’s an excellent idea! I’m mobility challenged as well so loading that salt bin is cumbersome and I always forget. I’m wanting to set up the empty height right where a single, small bag of salt will top it up and automatically add salt to my shopping list or maybe even order it for delivery for me.

I spoke to soon! I got it! Woohoo! Just needed to subscribe to the topic and click publish on the automatically added salt_sentry and salt_sentry_distance topics. These were all not detected by my screen reader so I didn’t know they were there. So simple a caveman could do it! Ha

Congrats! (And actually, you sound like a pretty bright light bulb!)

Any idea when you will have more?

They’re back in stock!

Hey very interested in using this. I use one of these flecks with the brine tank (https://a.co/d/imRrGq8) and usually get the pellets or crystals (whatever is available). Would this work with them?

I guess my confusion is do you calibrate this by finding the height in the brine tank where the water overtakes the salt and using that distance?

@muddro
This sensor has not much options, it only reads the distance.

You can smart program the tof sensor reading, that it will always measure a distance that is further away, but not measure a distance that is shorter than the previous one.

When water rises above the salt, it wil not be measured.
When filling the salt, you can then reset the last measured heigth and it start all over.

Better install a Clack WS1 head, it fits 1:1
My experience with Fleck is not great.

Hi. Just received my sensor and attempting to connect it to my HA using MQTT and it refuses to connect. I’m wondering if this is due to a 2.4ghz vs. 5ghz issue with my wifi. My router doesn’t allow me to separate the two channels and chose which one to connect. If that isn’t the issue, then I’m stumped. Followed all the instructions and nothing I do seems to work to get it to connect to my HA using MQTT. Thanks.

The ESP chip that the salt sentry uses only supports 2.4ghz, so that might be issue.

Okay, my router apparently had a firmware update which not allows me to force a 2.4ghz signal. I did a factory reset and followed all the steps and still no connection to my HA MQTT. I’m at a loss.

Love this device! I ran into a snafu though. My network map changed…long story, and I can no longer access the salt sentry via mqtt. I’m blind and use a screen reader but am unable to find the manual online to listen to how to reset the device and set it up with the changed ip address info. The links appear to be broken, but it could be me just missing things. The tindie page takes you to github where there is a manaul link which is 404. There is another link on a tindie.blog page and that is 404 as well. Could you fix the link or tell me where I’m messing up? Thank you!

Edit. I finally got the manual! GitHub isn’t working well with my screen reader for some reason. Now I’m having an issue with levels. I’m confused and don’t remember how I had it setup. I have distance to full set at 16 cm (distance from the sensor mounted under the lid to the top of the salt). I have distance to empty set at 38 cm (distance from the sensor mounted under the lid to the approximate low salt level when empty). The data appears on my home hub as distance 38.3 and percent 0.0. Prior to my network snafu the percent showed like a fuel gauge (100 full and 0 empty). Also, currently the salt is full and in the past the distance would be shown as 14-18, while it is showing 38.3 now. I messed something up I guess but can’t figure out what exactly.

Edit, edit…So after cycling power to the salt sentry all is good in the world again. Don’t know what the hang up was but it’s clear now. Thanks again for this awesome device!

Great that you got it working again, and apologies for not responding, I was enjoying my summer holiday :wink:

Does anybody have a good solution for a curved surface (aqmos) ?

@peterschmeckler
I use the float tube and a 3D printed sensorholder to put the sensor in.
I use a m5 stack TOF sensor. See Clack reader V4 aangeboden - Vraag & Aanbod - Tweakers
Is it a Clack model from Aqmos?

yes, it is a clack model, but i already have the salt sentry

I was not familiar with the aqmos, but you probably have a model similar to this one?

If the salt is below the blue part, I can imagine mounting the salt sentry could be a bit of a challenge. You would somehow need to mount it in such a way that the sensor of the Salt sentry is pointing down to the salt without too much of a angle. A 3d printed shim would probably be the best solution (If anybody has or could provide me with a 3d printable file, I’d be happy to print it for you), but maybe a stack of double sided tape could get it in the right position?

i have now epoxy-glued 2 watertight neodym-magnets to the case and 2 are on the top of the lid. it’s working :slight_smile:

My sensor has stopped reporting valid numbers since a while back and is constantly sending 100%.

I just tried going to its IP address in the browser and it gave me the reconfigure Wifi screen which I did and now the page is blank when I try to access it again over its IP.

Any idea how to fix it?

Hi Nick,

Not sure what is causing the issue, but you might try giving it a factory reset but pressing the right button for 10 seconds and the reconfigure it. If that does not help, please send me a pm to see if we can get things sorted.
