So i wanted to install my new shelly mini’s, but noticed i have no neutral on my light switch. Now thinking of replacing the shellys with the Sonoff ZBMINI’s, which don’t need neutral.
Situation:
1 Light switch (no rocker)
1 wire (guess with power, L1)
1 wire (guess goes to the bathroom lamp)
As i understood correctly, the L1 goes to Lin, the wire to the lamp to Lout, and then the switch just to S1 and S2, simple as that, is that correct?
I use a few ZBMinis. They do need a neutral. At least, the ones I bought do.
That said, there’s no requirement that the Sonoff be in the light switch box. You can also put it in the light fixture, if there’s room. The black wires in the above diagram would be the ones which go to the switch, or (as shown) two switches.
wiring is: L in power from Live of your electrical system
L out to lamp
on the other side of the lamp is Neutral from your electrical system
S1 and S2 depends on your needs, depends if you have a rocker switch (single or multiple) or a button switch.
Button switch you have to read the manual to change the ZBMini L2 mode. By factory setup it expects a rocker or multiple rocker switches. In the link you can scroll and find the manual.
if you are unsure better consult a professional maybe
Devices that rely on current passed through the load (e.g no Neutral) should be a last resort as any change in the blubs, fitting, etc can have a significant impact on the device.
Some older devices would only work with LEDs if there was one incandescent bulb load to create some current flow - which has been replaced with “ballast” modules (basically a capacitor and resistor) for the same purpose.
I’d suggest getting creative with where the device is installed.
UK wiring has Line and Neutral in the ceiling - I’ve installed Sonoff kit in ceilings (with secondary insulation as per BS7671), but the easiest is inside light fittings. Modern LED ceiling fittings are ideal for this with lots of space and access to Line, Neutral, and switch wires.
The tube will definitely have a (switched) Live and Neutral somewhere, and ample space to install a ZBmini (or a Shelly, for that matter).
You will still run into the problem where one of the wires will be missing. Your ideal option would be to pull a (permanent) live wire from your switch to your cabinet. A slight hassle, but worth it in the long run for the flexibility it offers.
Yes, a Sonoff MINI4RM needs a Neutral as not using a Neutral is just storing up different problems.
It is likely that a Matter device would not get enough energy through a LED fitting (which is what No Neutral means) to power the WLAN radio. Zigbee and Z-Wave are also probably unlikely without installing a ballast shunt across the LEDs. Lights can strobe not fully turn off, and drop off the network.
