Update button to ZHA blank firmware?

Hey Everyone,

I have an Ikea shortcut button attached to ZHA. I’ve received a firmware update notification through ZHA, but the “latest version” number is blank.

Should I do the update? Where can I find more information about this update ZHA thinks I should do?

Thanks for your help!

Doesn’t look like it’s an update for the button itself, but just to add support for new products: RELEASE NOTES

Ahh, so is ZHA reporting “there is a general Ikea update” instead of “there is an update specifically for this product”?

Yup. ZHA/Z2M just checks a remote server and if there is an update posted, it will notify you. Ikea (and Philips and Sengled (I think)) uses the same update package for pretty much all their firmware.

Ahhh. Does the ZHA interface provide the info link to where it go the firmware update or do we just manually look that up ourselves?

It’s defined in the URL for the device itself.

At the risk of repeating myself, don’t update if your device is working just fine.

I’d go one step further and suggest you disable the Firmware entity on each device if it’s working as expected.

I kind of disagree with that in the sense that a lot of manufacturers do provide security updates without providing a valid change log. Philips, Innr, and Third Reality are usually pretty good with their change logs… but most others… you have no idea if they’ve fixed something or not.

You do have a point there, but what guarantees that that “security update” (which is the usual cop out from the product team, in addition to “various bug fixes and improvements”) won’t cause issues with your device?

I’d rather err on the side of caution, and let others take the risk if they’re willing to be early adopters. Remember there’s no easy way to downgrade zigbee firmware at the moment. Would you rather risk rendering your device useless simply to apply a firmware update just to make sure you’re on the latest & greatest?

Yeah, that’s why I only kinda disagree… Been burned enough times already.

My expensive devices I won’t gamble with, but a contact or motion sensor? Eh, if it gets bricked with a firmware update, they are cheap enough to replace (or I’ll dig out one of the spares that I have).

Yes, at which point do you ask yourself - how much is enough?

I realise that most people nowadays will simply click on an “update available” button just because it’s there. I’m old school enough to realise that the old “if it works, don’t (try to) fix it” adage still holds in the present day.

All that makes sense.

I kinda lean more towards @code-in-progress in that I am a fan of fresh firmware; they have fixed more issues that caused in my experience.

However, should I trust a firmware update notification with a blank firmware version listed? Is the blank version number an issue with the source or ZHA?
