Same here. Not having automatic garage doors is like living with the Flintstones.
Every single worry in this thread is easily taken care of with coding.
Door shuts if no movement in garage, shuts if leaving. checks every few hours in the middle of the night if its shut, and will shut it if its not – that automation has never ran, because… well… proper coding. lol
I sleep peacefully knowing my automation are more reliable then my own mind. — They never forget to close the door.
Which is also why I have those automations I spoke of.
well, except for the auto opening one. That one was just a happy addition to the rest. I figured if I could have all of the auto closing, reminders etc, I could have one to open my door when I get home, too.
It saves me from expending all of that unnecessary extra effort pushing that (actually functional) button.
My entire HA journey started 4 years ago because I forgot to close my garage door once or twice and I thought “there has to be a way to get a notification if I leave it open and to be able to remotely close it”. And then I found HA and I’ve been addicted ever since.
What I have is an alert, if the garage door is open too long. I also have an automation that closes the door after a set time frame and it as well checks, if the door is open, when my night mode kicks in and closes it.
But, what I don’t have and wouldn’t want to have, is an automation that opens the garage door. This is the one part, I want to do with a button.
But I have to admit, that depends largely on the living situation you have. My garage is on the ground floor, two floors under my appartment, with a “public” connection to the appartment. If I leave my garage door open, everybody could take everything from my motor bike to all tools, the old TV and so on. And my car is prked right across that garage on a parking spot. If I’d have any automation, that depends on the car, it would open when I come home. And not to forget, I’m not the only one living in this house. There are five parking spots and the way o the houses in the backyard…
Nope, there is no case to make for an automation that opens the garage door in my situation.
