Wish to know this. Also, I’ve read somewhere they’re working on some sort of backup solution. Where is that stored?
Coming Friday 2025.1 will be released with some new features regarding backup so your questions will be answered!
You can join the beta program and have it now, no need to wait until Friday. You can even help track down bugs and issues if you do, making things better.
Cloud backup is optional and (atm) only for HA cloud subscribers, but the framework is built to be extendible to other cloud storage services if you wish to add your own favorite. The beta release notes do not say where the storage is located /bought, it was mentioned at some point in the beta discord but my recollection is not exact enough to reproduce it here. I any case it’s not a secret, maybe it will be added to the notes or mentioned in the video.
I would bet on AWS as Nabu Casa infrastructure is already using AWS for its services
Home assistant is not compliant to gdpr rules concerning data storage.
You are the admin of your Home Assistant server.
Home Assistant itself is compliant. It does not send personal data back to the developers or Nabu Casa unless configured to do so.
If you are storing data of guests or others then you become the controller under GDPR and must comply to its requirements.
Are you concerned about something specific?
If there is any concern it cannot be about HA itself of course, that can be run completely offline. But some may have questions about the cloud service offered by Nabu Casa, especially now that cloud backup is a thing. Where the data is stored, what jurisdiction those servers are under, etc.
Well wait to hear the announce of Nabu Casa / Open Home Foundation before making any assumptions
Seems like solid advice.
Nothing to find.
Data from European people need to be stored in Europe. And what data is stored?
Call me oldfashioned but I don’t like to take my information from video. It’s a 2hr video, and I would only need the relevant 2mins out of it. TBH this sort of info should really be in the Nabu Casa FAQ (FAQ), but that doesn’t seem to be updated yet
Here you are.

So, apparently the company where they rent the storage space is Cloudflare, and their servers are located in the “western EU”.
Thank you @Sir_Goodenough . Interesting that you see this as a favor to me and ask me to do something back to the community. I only reacted to this thread because I think the question @stefan.uytterhoeven asked is a valid one and there are people in the community that may feel strongly about this, not because it is of interest to me personally.
This post pre-dates yours by about an hour, does that still count towards my debt?
yes
