Why are people asking the same questions over and over again? (Or the Regulars' Chatroom) šŸ¤·

Yeah, i liked the idea, when i was showed around, that everything was build-in

To be honest, i would never install these ā€œsmallā€ units they are selling here, for the living areas, maybe garage, as you say , itā€™s not only find a suitable wall space ( for the in door unit ), Iā€™ts a Damn ugly Device to have Hangin on the Wall, And ive been in Hotelā€™s in Asia Having those freezing dry winds blowing right in my Face, when i want to sleep  , some place they are so old/damage, there is only 1 level full speed/coldest temperature, hahaha, yeah they give me negative vibes

Yeah, Iā€™m about 40 minutes west of Charlotte close to the foothills. Been to northern Alabama a few times for my car club. Nice areas actually.

Summer is coming and coming fastā€¦ Hell, we just had a few days last week where we topped out at 87F and 89F and I was like ā€œIā€™M NOT READY!ā€. Then this week, weā€™re in the 60s and 70s. Seriously weather, make up your mind!

hahaha yeah, I think theyā€™re ugly too, but I hate having to cool the whole house when itā€™s just me, in one room all day (my home office). I do have a window A/C in here, but even then, I hate to run it until I absolutely have to.

And ANY hotel has the absolute worst A/C units. I went to a hotel a couple years ago and they had one of the mini-splits halfway between the floor and the ceiling. I have no idea who thought that was a good idea, but it was literally blowing on the bed all night and LOUD.

Wow. A lot of strong opinions here.

As an open source project HA is absolutely amazing. What has been accomplished is quite commendable.

I have asked many questions that I am sure have been asked before so I apologize for casting a dark shadow on your forum. Most questions have been responded to with very meaningful answers that have been a tremendous help. I am very appreciative.

But here are the cold hard facta. Using HA takes a commitment of a hugh amount of time to learn and ā€œread the docsā€. Just reading something does not immediately impart knowledge and understanding. You have to try and fail. This is not a platform for someone to come and quickly automate their home. It is a hobby that requires a big time commitment. HA uses some concepts and terminology that are clearly unique to HA so it is in fact confusing upon first exposure.

So give the question askers a break. They are just trying to get from A to B as quickly as possible and possibly donā€™t quite realize what they have signed up for. As amazing as HA is, it is clearly not for everyone in its current form. Personally I have paired back my expectations as I can only spend a few hours a week ā€œreading the docsā€, trying things and breaking things. And yes updates break a lot of stuff, that alone requires a maintenance commitment just to keep it running. Maybe when I retire I can be a HA know it all but until then I will have to rely on the grace of some very nice people in this forum. To them I say ā€œThank youā€.

Is this really true? My installation is around 230 devices and I cannot remember the last time anything broke due to an update. Reading patch notes (especially breaking changes) and then take those into account isnā€™t something I see as a ā€œbig time commitmentā€, but I might be lucky not being affected by many breaking changes.

How to help us help them - or How to give a good answer.

You are reading this thread wrong. Some of this is venting frustration so that we donā€™t vent to ā€˜customersā€™.
Some of this is figuring out the best way.
Some of this is having fun.

Donā€™t read too much into this.

We estimate the HA Discord gets 40 or so new members a day. Here I wouldnā€™t think itā€™s too much different. I think we do OK.

I know my patience runs out when people ask for help, I provide it, then they tell me that Iā€™m wrong and get angry at me. People are people.

I believe strong opinions create healthy debates and forward progress. You shared a very strong opinion based on your point of view and we encourage that.

Whatā€™s your TZ? Itā€™s usually released around noon my time which is ~17ish UTC

I believe you ā€œnailed itā€ in this commend, Most/Many People in here maybe start with a light-bulb, in a brand-app (a no-brainer ) sorry for my wording , then they buy a camera, another brand, also running fine in their brand-appā€¦ and so it goes

Then some people want to ā€œtake it to a higher levelā€
At this point they are capable of Google, find and install i.e HA , basically without reading many lines of info/guidance.

And as you mention, They still Just wanna go from A to B, As Quickly as possible, And They Donā€™t ā€œSettleā€, with their Light-bulb and Camera, conveniently, Now in same App.( They could have chosen Google-Home )

And as They didnā€™t had to read much , nor spend alot of time initially to get from A (2 devices in 2 Brand-Apps) , To B, An Opensource Project, where they can combine their 2 Device, and Alot more cool stuff.
Here the reality might ā€œcatch upā€ for many People.

  1. they donā€™t have the required knowledge/experience.
  2. They still think/hope they can Move On, from B to C, without reading ( To much, As quickly as Possible ), either they donā€™t have time or the patience for that, and/ or they donā€™t understand what they are reading( And they forgot all about Search, And Google, which they initially had to use to get started" , or they end up in a ā€œhopeless/frustratingā€ state, after reading the first 5 hits. (without finding ā€œa buttonā€ to fix their problem)

Then next stage is, they either Sign Up here or joining some of the other HA-Forums, which ever one they first encounter.
And they keep on with their same deep rooted behavior/strategies, Donā€™t read, Donā€™t Search, Give Up after 3-5 attempts, in worse case , Blame on HA and everyone else

Some People reflect , realize their either short comings, lack of time, or the fact that itā€™s not a commercial-brand phone app they installed on their Hardware ( To use HA Phone APP, for controlling their Various Devices )
Some find/but yet donā€™t realize they are deep into a constant changing(Updating/Upgrading) world, which they have never had any interest/knowledge in. A world where one Have To Read, Have to Google, Have to Test, again, and again ā€¦ and again

So what do they Expect when signing up to i.e a Forum/Community like this ?
Finding People with same interests, use-cases, setup, personality, behavior ?
Finding People with more time( to search/test/troubleshooting for them).
Finding more experienced People, with time , which hungers to provide them with a ā€œperfectā€ solution to their specific use-case/setup hardware etc. etc. ( Help, i canā€™t access my HA, it all started yesterday.
Fact is NONE of the basic factors/info is Very Often never even mention initially when people Post a Topic or Question, Because they Didnā€™t ā€œfound timeā€ Or G.A.S Reading the very first post, in the Forum, Reading Guide Lines, Reading HA-Docs ( Number 2 in the Top Meny, Not hard to find ) (1. Integrations(docs-examples of the specific integration) 2. Docs( Alot of exaples/guidlines)/other Guides)As well as the Very First Topic(Post) in the Forum isnā€™t

I Respect you have your shared amount of time available for your interest, as well as your Reflections(which many people lacks)

I think this Topic started as a ā€œshout outā€ caused by the hopelessly repeated questions/behavior, spite above DOCS, And First Post
How to help us help you - or How to ask a good question.

So saying ā€œSo give the question askers a breakā€ is ofcause an valid answer
Question remains thou ā€¦ HOW ? ā€¦ And this is what this Topic Originally was about( Please read some of the ā€œout-comeā€ of this Topic !( docs-examples/guidlines)/other Guides) to help People, Made by People Who have/spend probably more time here, than on ones own system( Free of charge)
OBS: itā€™s in the Social Category Only ! ā€¦ other-vice you might have seen ā€œstrongerā€ opinions, do to the ā€œrelaxedā€ off-topic subject discussed here as well

We should obviously make it harder to start with HA. Then the people who are lured in by ease of use wonā€™t be here, and we wonā€™t be worried any more about such people.

These bloody Nabu Casa people are just like hard drug dealers. Give people an easy road in, and by the time they get really into the product, it is impossible to get out.

Yesterday 20h 30 still no sign of it. Just finished the installation of the beta, no problems so far

Ordered some battery powered Zigbee presence sensors yesterday, looks promising.

Did not find the topic anymore.
