Have you actually tried this?
It is super simple and there are video tutorials.

Yes. It is super simple but you need to connect smartphone / laptop also to VPN network to view Home Assistant. If you want to use this for iOS / Android app you must be still connected do VPN.
I think that if you set a static IP for Home Assistant and redirect port 8123 on the router, you can connect via public IP. The problem is only if it is not static.
Ok, I know there is DuckDNS and similar, but if there was a built-in solution? One that wouldnât burden the servers?
What if the Home Assistant app (iOS / Android) automatically retrieved / updated the external IP address while the application is connected to the local network?
Or if there will be a built-in simple DDNS or similar solution? Not VPN tunnel - only server with public IP addresses.
I agree 100% with all your points.
If you truly donât want to pay, there are ways to do it yourself for free. Itâs not like itâs impossible or locked down somehow.
This is an unreasonable ask IMHO for all the reasons @capstan1 mentions.
Itâs not about whether someone wants to pay or doesnât want to pay. Itâs more about the idea of improvement. I think the idea that the application get external IP while it will be connected locally not load servers. The idea with built-in DDNS will also not burden too much because in this case you only enter the ID and get the IP address.
But it is. You are removing one of the ONLY incentive for the average person to contribute monetarily to Nabu Casa and hence the platform. Thatâs my view anyway.
I assure you that this was not my goal. I was thinking that since there are alternative methods for remote access, why not introduce a built-in one that would not burden the servers. The Cloud service works a little differently because it creates a tunnel (you donât have to redirect ports, etc.) but all transfer is thru server. And in addition to remote access, you also have other services such as cloud backup, etc.
I ask moderators to close this thread. Many people explained many things to me, for which I thank you very much.
But cloud backup takes a lot of space.
Even if we go for a low number, say 1 GB per backup, thatâs 1 TB for 1000 users.
That is a lot, and a lot of traffic.
Cloud backup is not my idea. It is already in beta.
Donât worry, I can tell you are genuine in your request. I also think the community does tend to be a bit too harsh on WTH posts when the intent is actually (at least in large part) to help see things with fresh eyes and maybe break some of the Stockholm syndrome that is common when you have a complicated system and kind of a ârite of passageâ and those who come out on the other side lose track of the issues or maybe even on some level expect others to have to go through the same difficulties. So donât worry I didnât think you were coming from a bad-faith place or you were being cavalier
