Z-Wave Garage Door Relay?

I currently use a Honeywell wireless garage relay, and it’s the last device I need to replace with Z-Wave before I get rid of the Honeywell system.

Can somebody recommend a good Z-Wave device I can use to trigger my garage door opener?

I use a Zooz ZEN17 relay with a wired door sensor. ZEN16 should also work. Using these means I need to create my own Cover template in HA, or you can use them as individual entities.

Otherwise, there are actual “Barrier operator” devices like the GoControl/Nortek/Linear GD00Z series. The newest revision, GD00Z-8-GC, supports S2 security which is more efficient compared to the older models like the -4/-5 which only support S0. The benefit of the Barrier operator devices are native Cover support in HA as well as built-in safety features required by some regulations.

Fibaro Roller Shutter 3 or Qubino Flush 1D Relay will do also.

What exactly is the model of your Honeywell wireless garage relay? Can you share some photos or link or maybe more information of your current setup? Some wiring diagram / sketches maybe?

I am using a Zooz ZEN51 to control my Garage Door Opener - write up here:
Zooz ZEN51 to Control Garage Door - Configuration / Z-Wave - Home Assistant Community (home-assistant.io)
… plus an ecolink tilt sensor to monitor the door status.

Hmmm… interesting.
At the moment I use my opener and the tilt door sensor as individual entities. So I am curious: what exactly does the Cover template thing bring to the table? I tried to read the doc but can’t say I understand what a cover setup would do (comparing to a momentary button press plus a on/off door sensor). Am I missing something good?

Is there a write up somewhere that I could read your Cover template yaml config?

I am using this tiny friend:
Smart Implant - to make your old device smart | FIBARO
I just sends an ON and will be reset to OFF after 1 sec (as required by my Rademacher Garage door motor.

I second this approach also using Fibaro Smart Implant. However I went step further:

  • one binary input used for door status detection (with reed switch and magnet)
  • one analog input used for car presence detection (along with Sharp IR distance sensor)
  • one binary switch used to to control gate (same way as @NCO3 described)

I use a

Zen17 relay, with NO input for control, I use the switch ports with magnetic reed switches at the bottom to detect fully closed(tilt is not reliable for fully closed as my doors are high lift.

I use a z wave tilt sensor to detect open %

Cover allows you to control the up or down state, create a template to show % of closure, as well as define a template or entity to stop the door.

As well you can definite templates for icon state as well with cover.

Good idea.
I wanted to avoid cabling, so I just put a Ring z-wave window sensor on the rail of my motor

Well, in my case some cabling was unavoidable, as in fact I have 2 cars garage, so 2 gate sensors, 2 car presence sensors, 2 buttons to be pressed in controller + extra work I share the Smart Implants with additional sensor that senses presence of automover (it is very old one, dumb model) in the base station. And I wanted to close everything in one box, to share power supply. But I lke the idea of window sensor, have some project in planning, where this can be potentially reused!

Sounds like a great project.

even dump “things” can make your life easier.

Oh yes! That was surely the best tech investment in my life! Can’t imagine now livig with out automover!
