Zigbee adapter for better coverage

Hello,

Currently I’ve a Raspberry pi 4 with a Conbee II. Set up it’s fine, however due the size of my house (+100m2 and 3 floors) with thick concrete walls it’s an issue… mostly due I would like have some outdoors sensors and I’m not able to make the signal arrive.

The position where the Raspberry + Conbee 2 is place… is not the best, however, I’ve tried to pair some devices to plugs I configured as repetears, this did the trick for some cases but not all.

Will a different Zigbee adapter (maybe with antenna or more powerfull) improve or fix this issue? if so, can be both plugged into the raspberry ?

What are possible workarounds?

Do you have wired Ethernet in your house (or the ability to run it)?

If so pick up one of Tube’s PoE Zigbee coordinators. https://tubeszb.com/

That way you can put the coordinator somewhere central in your house that has Ethernet.

Otherwise if that is not possible then you should just invest in more repeater devices.

thanks for the hint, I’m not familiar with those devices with a ethernet.

  • How need to be configured home assistant to reach this device ? Once on the network Home assistant discover it automatically ?
  • it can co-exist with the Conbee plugged directly into the Raspberry ?

No, it replaces it.

Or you could add a zigbee2mqtt instance and have two zigbee nets.

Another option to try would be stronger routers. Something like a Sonoff zbdongle-p or zbdongle-e flashed with router firmware…

I have a similar situation but with a Skyconnect stick. I switched to an Smlight controller. It has a larger antenna and better range and makes the network more stable. Most important, it’s wired and wireless so I can run it over wifi now and switch it to wired PoE once I move all my systems into the same closet as this controller.

That’s the beauty of Ethernet connected coordinators though, you can put the coordinator in a better spot than your equipment closet. These places tend to be full of shielding metal and electromagnetic interference. Put the coordinator away from here central to the rest of your repeater devices.
