Zigbee devices to Google Home without Google Assistant integration?

I’ve got Home Assistant running with a SONOFF Zigbee Dongle P and Zigbee2MQTT. I’m trying to figure out if there’s a way to connect my Zigbee devices to Google Home without using the Google Assistant integration in Home Assistant.

I’ve heard about Matter as a potential solution. Has anyone had any experience with using Matter to connect Zigbee devices directly to Google Home without going through other hubs or cloud services?

Any other suggestions or workarounds would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Hello auto4food,

It is my understanding that Matter requires a mac address per device which zigbee does not have. Zigbee over matter requires a hub because of this. I don’t know if a HA border router can do that but I suspect it may.

Basically you need to read a lot more about matter and thread and stuff, but basically what you are asking, I don’t think so with that dongle.

Search engine terms to help get more info about matter, thread, and HA:

site:www.home-assistant.io matter

I believe the OP is refering to using the Matter bridge mentioned below. That would work with any device that is supported by the bridge. I do not have experience with it though:

Thanks for the replies!
Yes, I think this is what I want.
