I wanted to build a very reliable intruder alarm with a load of extra features. I’d had a high end traditional intruder alarm. It phoned me to say the alarm was going off. I wanted it to tell my phone exactly what was going on, Bedroom movement sensor, then Hall (no false alarms).

I wanted it to automatically fake occupancy, with various lights and speakers playing the
radio, when the alarm was set. I wanted it to switch off the heating when the alarm was set.
