There was a sale on Costco’s website for some First Alert smoke/CO detectors ($99 for a 3-pack) but they are Z-Wave, and I don’t have a Z-Wave hub, so they won’t connect to HA at all.
What are people using these days that will work pretty much right out of the box over wifi, and integrate well with HA?
You can add a zwave radio USB dongle to your HA for ~$35.
I haven’t used it, but there is a HACS integration for Nest Protect, which are generally the top reviewed smart smoke/heat/CO2 detectors on the market.
Unfortunately, that integration is borderline abandoned (plus it’s cloud-dependent and I don’t believe the API is even officially supported?) and there’s a number of major issues (mainly that the entities don’t get updated very quickly/regularly). When my Nests expire, I definitely don’t plan on getting the same.

Nest Protect looks super cool, but I’m not so sure about Google stuff. HomeKit stuff, I’m down with.
I guess it makes sense to get a Z-Wave USB stick to make these work. What from this list might you recommend?
