2025.01 beta: Backups encrypted?

i am 10y user in the past of Fibaro 2 (and little bit 3)
ask me what was annoyed more? yes, encrypted backup + fibaro cloud. all backup files are encrypted using a hardware-specific info…
and what?
hello HASS, you are on a right track (irony)

And, again, like at esphome (api) it seems that we’ll be forced with HA’s created random password, not the one by our own choice… i like to know - memorize my passwords, what i hate most is some random passwords which can’t be memorized, so i have to write them down in some notepad file or similar… which makes all only less secure. I’m pretty sure that most (if not all) users will have downloaded password (rescure) file saved along in the same folder with backups on private/cloud server. Very secure indeed…

so since new addition it will not be possible to download backup and browse the content offline without decrypting with use of HA? really?

Correct. It is not how backups should be used (apparently). They are for doing a full restore only.

Additionally there is no longer an option to back up add-ons before updating them in case something goes wrong and you need to revert to a previous version.

Sorry…What?!

You have daily backups now. Apparently this is deemed sufficient.

Except of course they have not considered data loss from add-ons like InfluxDB and MariaDB.

If my eyes roll back any further in my head I’m going to sever my optic nerves.

This is pure Horror.
I am really shocked and speechless.

It is possible to download it, you just can’t open/decrypt it.

If this won’t be changed then my days with built-in backup as my main backup source will be over. As long as samba share will work i’ll find a way to make my own backups with synology by copying whole content of HA to a backup location.

I’m not sure that i like that someone “imposes” their own belief about how things should work withour asking anyone, and this is happening more and more frequently. There are sooo many HA users now (who, after all, pay to HA for author’s living…) that it would be really only fair thing to do to ASK users, not just doing it…

Sorry for such words, guys, but i’m a bit pis**d off right now… i wish i wouldn’t install this beta, at least new year would be still happy for me…

Just when you think that you have finally all set up like you wish a new update comes and destroys it all…

So a question for a noob on this subject:
Whenever i’m tinkering and screw things up i usually just get a backup from google drive and fire up another VM/LXC and restore with that backup. Will i still be able todo it that way?

You can, it’s just a PITA for Windows users. You have to install Python and a cryptography package. You can then run this script: Backup/Snapshots no longer decryptable? - #12 by Taapie

They gonna limit me accessing files I OWN? Are they f*n mad or it’s another social experiment?

It’s MY decision whether I backup it, encrypt and where I store them.

@balloob Can we get someone from the HA development team involved please?

You can just choose to not enable the new builtin automatic backups and use whatever unencrypted backup solution instead.

do we have other solution to create online backups? what about automatic backups when updating ha or add-ons?

Afaik solutions like google drive backup just use the built-in backup

Google Backup that I linked above can produce unencrypted backups under B2 at least.

The legacy backup methods that third party backup systems use has not been depreciated yet and there is no indication of when this will happen. They will continue to function until this occurs.

This does not help with the add-on or core backup option when updating though. You would have to manually trigger a backup before updating. There is no option in the update card.

then what’s the point of introducing the new method? are they going to silently upload it to cloud or what?

Yes at a bit past 4am every morning a daily local backup is created. You have the option to set the number of backups to keep and the option to store it in the cloud too if you are a Nabu Casa subscriber (up to 5GB).

“Silently” is the key adjective here. There are no events for you to monitor to let you know if a backup has started, succeeded or failed.

Odd that the Understanding Our Community-The 2024 Home Assistant Survey did not ask anything about this.

Are they really trying to understand their community?
