2025.2 Beta Backup changes

+1 Been there, done that and I totally agree! WOW was my first thought too. I was shocked at how quickly these changes were implemented. Very impressive.

To @MissyQ and the entire HA team, thank you for listening to the feedback and acting upon it. Kudos!

Oh, this sounds great – thanks for listening and taking positive action!

When I’m on the other side of this nasty flu, I’ll try finding time to getting a beta running on a test RasPi

Small suggestion: if you’re not already doing so, consider adding a bit of variance to the default nightly backup time – spreading it out over a random 30-60min time range, to reduce the Thundering Herd impact on your cloud servers. (Probably something that should only be done for Nabu Casa destination, and user-controllable if the user sets their own specific time).

lost the overview of requests tbh, so let me ask here:

did someone already mention/request configurable time slots for backup per location?

Asking because I am fine with the default settings, except for my local Synology location, which is down during those hours.

Id love to be able to customize that time, and did just now, but then it uses that for all configured locations.

isnt the exactly why has been done?

I believe this situation is why the automation action was implemented - but even then, as I understand it, it is still triggering the whole configuration and not a targeted destination. Let me verify.

thx

yes we can click the button ‘Create backup now’, and have this smal config flow ending with the location selection

Didnt see that possibility yet in the actions tab of the dev tools.

would be fine by me btw, set a generic backup system in the UI, (and leave out the Synology there) and next create a small automation that runs that action daily at the users time of choice.

Great, thundering herd already handled, then!

I’ll slump back on the couch, and return once the fever has subsided

haha, yes, take care, you’re not alone. We have an official flu epidemic going on right now…

For your example/situation, the best option would be to just set up a custom time it runs instead of the system optimal time. It does work as I expected, which means if you would like to have it go when your Synology is on you’ll need to configure all of them to do the same.

I don’t think that’s exactly what you want, so I believe that this may be something for a FR.

The linking has been fixed on 2025.2.0b2 .

Yep, connecting works now.

Yeah, linking now works, and if I check in my OneDrive folder the folders are created in /Apps/Home Assistant/ and the backup is also uploaded. HA gives an error about the upload failing though.

Thank you for fixing the backup naming convention!!

wrote it up here Allow separate backup schedule per location

or do you want multiple automated backups to be scheduled, where you can specify the location per automatic backup,
but for instance also choose to select different add ons.

personally I dont need that, and I figured to keep the request as simple as possible

suppose what you ask could/would be very relevant for others, so the might be worth the trouble of a separate FR indeed

the 2 features wouldnt hurt each other

have you planned a backup on google drive?

on your 2025.2 Beta Backup changes - #42 by Mariusthvdb

i don’t find google drive

@MissyQ Maybe a special request:

I believe it would be very practical to have the available core integrations for backup listed and linked in the main Backup documentation at Backup - Home Assistant

Onedrive, Google Drive and Synology come to mind, I am not sure if there are more (I only use these 3…)

Would this be something you could take to the docs team?
