2025.2: Iterating on backups

Thanks, I will have a look, although it has worked so might have soemthing to do with the graph refactoring as well.

Hi folks

While trying the new Broadcast intent, I’m getting errors :

  • When using Gemini : Unexpected error during intent recognition
  • When using Home Assistant : Unknown intent HassBroadcast

Is there any specifi configuration regarding the devices where this will be broadcasted ? I only have Google Home devices (I’ll soon be testing the Voice PE  )

Query used (in french) : Annonce partout que les frites sont prĂȘtes (In english : “Announce everywhere the fries are ready”).

Looking at the french intents for HassBroadcast, I think this query should work.

Any idea ? Thanks !

With the release of the new backup system, is there any event or other way of knowing when a backup starts, if one is running and when it completes?

No not yet.

given this has been brought up many a time now, and I cant recall some sort of response, even in the recently developed style of: “we’re watching but not responding, and not responding doesnt mean we didnt see it”, ( :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:) and, I dont think there is a formal FR for it in the FR section here, wouldnt it be wise to open that?

A FR for update events and status entities?

The devs are aware of the request from the previous discussions. But sure open an FR if you like.

sure: FR: add events and status entities for Backup status

please add if I missed details that could be helpful

I’m not used to comment releases but I’ve just watched the release party stream and hearing @frenck saying that some comments on the previous release were “not human/demotivating” makes me feel bad. All the team at Nabu Casa is doing a great job, sometimes it doesn’t fit all the needs or some parts could look “unpolished”. But everytime we can all be sure it’s made with love, made with the bests intentions.
I’m around since 2018 around release 0.75 something like this, made some modest contributions
The community has grown up so much since then for the best and sometimes for the worst

Please, keep in mind that most of the job is made by community people, and guys at Nabu Casa are doing their top very best to keep up home assistant at the very top of the world of home automation platform.

You can disagree/argue with choices that are made, but just stay constructive. Don’t be stupid !

I’ve updated my HA Core to 2025.2.1 and the new backup features are not showing up, nor the cloud locations such as Google Drive.
I’m using the Hassio-google-drive-backup is that the problem?

How about Reading the instructions?

Totally agree on that last point!

That said, those bad feelings went both ways. Demotivating is a good way to describe how a lot of users felt when functionality they depended on was summarily removed. For a long time no-one seemed to be listening. We now know that those concerns weren’t falling on deaf ears, and that’s a relief. But when faced with a deafening silence, it was hard to feel good about the direction HA appeared to be going.

I think it’s now clear that everyone wanted what’s best for HA and the user community.

Most of those posts weren’t intended to be demoralizing. They were an effort to convey some concerns which weren’t being acknowledged. Had the concerns been addressed up front, there would have been no need to keep repeating them.

I’ve worked in lots of customer-facing roles, both in IT and other fields. It helps to develop a thick skin, not take things personally, and be quick to respond if things aren’t going the way you planned.

I’m hopeful that this experience has left us all wiser, and better able to avoid situations like this in the future.

Great to see the team at Nabu Casa addressing the concerns about the January release within this one.

I second completely what everyone is saying and hope people can be respectful towards the developers of the product. It’s hard work maintaining an application at times, but it’s important to remember it’s a two way street between the community and the developers.

Both parties need to work together to ensure the product heads in the right direction and doesn’t alienate the very community that helped the product get to where it is now.

I can attest to that having being a product owner for a system used in a corporate environment with 6000 daily users. Ensuring user satisfaction against new product releases is challenging if not handled appropriately.

The one improvement / additional feature I’d like to see added to the voice assistant is the ability to bond a users profile to their voice signature.

Educating the voice assistant with a person’s voice would make for a more secure experience and if someone spoke to the voice assistant that wasn’t registered / recognised, it could be set to reject any commands.

Security is an important domain in a smart home and needs to have this extended into voice to ensure that external people can’t run sensitive commands.

I’d welcome thoughts from the community on this to see if something like this could be developed into the capability eventually.

Me too
Although it only seems to effect History Graph(s). Line Graphs [seem] to still be fine.

  1. overall this release is fantastic! I’m very happy with the backup updates, and the LLM context addition is going to be HUGE as a building block in the future!

  2. I have to say I really don’t love the changes to the history graphs, specifically the change to the way the legend no longer shows all the different titles at once, and tapping on graphs shows a big box with the entire legend in it.

Number (2) is mostly coming from the mobile experience, with a smaller screen. On some of my graphs, I have to tap TWELVE TIMES to get to the item I want to remove by tapping the name of, and the legend only shows one or two items at a time which is a pretty miserable experience. Similarly, on mobile tapping the graph with a number of items on it pops up a giant box that blocks the entire graph, and trying to make it go away requires hitting the narrowest edges of the graph that are still exposed.

Anyway, besides my nitpicks on the graphs legend experience on mobile, I am overall pleased, and keep up the good work!

The new backup system is fantastic!

I’d love to also see the ability to configure the retention length per backup location. For example, say I want to keep the last 30 days on backups on my NAS, but only my last 5 backups in Google Drive

Fantastic to see really robust backup tools being build straight into HA! (would also love to see an iCloud Drive upload option in the future)

I would really appreciate if we could finally get rid of these annoying “new devices discovered” notifications.

You can. Click on “Ignore”.
