433MHz (or similar), dog tracker

Does something similar exist? I would then integrated in HA.

I see a lot of bluetooth or gps devices that to me make no sense. I would need something with a good range like 433MHz or better

What do you want to track? Only if your dog is in range or not?

a 433mhz dog tracker would make less sense then a gps device.
what would the 433mhz sensor tell? i am in range?

both needed: the gps value and something that sends it.

Only GPS what for, the dog can’t read gps (and I don’t need the historical records of where the dog WAS, I need to know where he IS).

the dog, where he is

lol, the dog shouldnt read gps, the device neads to use gps to know where it is.
without GPS there is no way to tell the dogs location.

and then you have to use another device to read out the location. most people want that to be a mobile device.
and most mobile phones have bluetooth and no 433 mhz

so a 433 mhz device doesnt make sense, and i dont think they are out there.

I think he’s mistaken what a gps device is. A gps device tracks it’s location using gps. Rf433 is a way to send data. If you don’t have gps, where does the location data comes from?

What i think you think you need is a gps locator that track gps location and send the data using rf433.

bluetooth has a range of 10 meter. In that range I already have a sensor: MY EYES.

Besides even if you need a range of few meter (I really can’t figure out what the use would be) my experience with the bluetooth system is crap: frequent disconnections

yes, this is what I am looking for, or maybe other wireless with longer range for outdoor use.

I guess RF is good for big gardens only.

good dog trackers (or in general the small GPS trackers) have an app.
the tracker uploads his location to a server and the app reads that out.
if it is in bluetooth range the app will know that too.

that way you can know where your dog is, even if you are in another country.

thats the way little devices like this work:

Thanks but it’s still bluetooth, like crowd bluetooth. You have to wait that ANOTHER person using the bluetooth app is near your dog, and so it sends the value to their server, and you can get (I think) a push notification.
A good system if you have 99% of the population uses the app, and also in that case is not perfect (if nobosy near the dog, you still don’t have gps data available). IMO is crap …

This are the reviews in Amazon, that kind of confirm my feelings

So basically you want a GPS that push the data to home-assistant.

Can you have some cheap SIM card where you live? If yes you could use a GSM tracker. They are cheap, and some send their data to Google Map, so you could probably use the Google Map card to display the current position.

Maybe this one: Mini GPS Tracker with Collar (I have never tried it but all the review are positiv)

good idea too

I guess it would be a better solution, using 433MHz won’t get you far enough that a GPS is required. Installing a bell around your dog neck would have the same efficiency for a tenth of the cost ^^

not sure the neighbours would be happy.

Also I risk some police reporting for animal abuse
