I would like to add a 433MHz thermometer to my HA installation.
My local swimming pool is far away and no wifi; I have an RFXcom so this will be my only solution without adding a communication link.
What probe and hardware (probe-HA relay) do you recommend to create this thermometer?
It will be dry, only the probe in the water; not on battery.
RF433 will not travel any farther than WIFI unless you boost the power and/or add an external antenna, similar to WIFI. I had to add an antenna to get my RF433 mailbox sensor to reach the house 50 feet but thru a couple of walls.
Depends… My gate openers tiny keyfob without external antenna and only 3v coin cell battery gives 200m open view.
Some quality transmitter modules can have kilometer range with tiny external antenna.
Well, that helpful. Give the man a link for one that does long distance temperature and we are all set.
I had cheap crap, and make it work with a quarterwave antenna addition.
I don’t know any wireless temperature probe sensors to suggest.
Good range 433 modules I have used for example CC1101 and HC-12, but you need MCU and temp probe.
Inkbird with an RTL-SDR should be able to do 15m. I can get >20m with at least one brick wall on a cheap 433 device outside to RTL-SDR attached to my HA.
No doubt it’s doable, there are hundreds of ways doing it with wifi, esp-now, classic 433, lora, rtl-sdr, zigbee… etc.
The only ready made sensor probe by now was presented in post#6. Is it good or crap, I don’t know. Are there others?
Depends…
I have my irrigation well controlled by crap Sonoff mini (wifi). >50m distance and one exterior wall. Has been working reliably for two years now. Try with your phone if you get wifi at your pool. One option could be wifi extender, useful for other devices/purposes as well.
