I recently upgraded my HA configuration, moving from a Raspberry Pi 3, to a Raspberry Pi 4; I quickly discovered I needed the upgraded Aeotec Zstick Gen5+ antenna that is compatible with the Raspberry Pi 4, so problem1 was solved.
Problem 2 was that I couldn’t get the Aeotec to go into pairing mode from Home Assistant. I could unplug it from the Pi, hit the pairing button, and pair devices manually, then plug the stick back into the Pi and reboot the Pi and the devices would show up. That workaround was sufficient until it came to my GoControl GD00Z-4 garage door opener; that device would pair using the same manual workaround method, but not all the entities would show up, more specifically, I couldn’t get it to open/close, I could only see some basic stats related entities. Some more digging and I found it was due to pairing in “unsecure mode”. Well now I was forced to figure out how to get pairing with Home Assistant to work.
That’s when I found a helpful tip to put the Aeotec stick into a USB hub cable, and then stick that hub directly into the Rasberry Pi4, something about plugging the Aeotec directly into the RPi4 can cause issues … and sure enough, pairing started working - bear in mind, the LED light on the stick will not change when pairing via Home Assistant, but pairing does work.
Problem 3, which is commonly understood, but bit me, is Zwave devices that were previously paired to other controllers need to be unpaired / reset, which can be done manually on the Aeotec stick by unplugging it from the RPi, holding the pair button for 5+ seconds until the light turns amber color, and their pairing the device (check your device instructions for doing the unpair). Once done, the device should pair normally.
Zwave is never easy with Home Assistant… but if you are persistent, and have enough fairy dust to spread around, it will eventually work. This has been about 2 days of trial/error, hope this saves someone else the trouble.
