A great outdoor Zigbee contact sensor

I had tried a bunch of contact sensors to tell if my pool cover was closed or open. The problem with these were generally water intrusion, as the usual aqara or sonoff sensors are not rated for outdoor use, especially near water.

I tried an earlier Bosch sensor, the RFMS-ZBMS, but that was supported with zigbee2mqtt, ZHA, or deconz. My hubitat could talk to it, but I didn’t want to run multiple zigbee networks except as a transition.

I found the newer model model (the BSEN-C2) was supported under zigbee2mqtt, and is IP45 rated. It’s hard to find in North America, but did find a 3 pack available at grooves.land that ships to the US: https://www.grooves-inc.com/bosch-bosch-door-window-contact-door-window-sensor-wireless-door-window-white-bosch-hardware-electronic-pZZa1-2100709457.html

You do need to scan an activation QR code for pairing. That means it only runs on zigbee2mqtt because I don’t think ZHA or deconz supports that. But I haven’t found a better sensor that is rated for outdoors and IP45 of better rated.

Thanks for the info and I have a similar issue but had not find a solution yet.
Tbh for that price I would buy cheap sensor and seal them with silicone or create some case for it…did you think about that and if so why rejected ?
A possible alternative is to extend the reed switch and keep the sensor-case elsewhere (less humid) but not sure how long a cable it would accept…just a thought.

I just put an Aqara contact sensor in an IP65 rated box. The magnet works through it easily.

I have three of these (gate + 2x mailbox) working reliably for over a year.

Tom, thanks for the link. I had heard about folks doing that before, but never had a link to a specific box that was IP rated and fit. Still, it’s nice not to have to take it apart to change a battery, etc…, esp a coin cell that lasts not nearly as long as the 123 lithium one included in the sensor.

That said, I do have some other other outdoor uses and will try out the box you recommended.

I have two of these
Amazon.com: HomeSeer HS-DS100+ Z-Wave Plus Door/Window Sensor

and I sprayed them with this stuff
Amazon.com: CorrosionX Corrosion Technologies 91002 (16 fl oz trigger spray) – Multi-Purpose Lubricant, Penetrant, Rust and Corrosion Preventative | Industrial Strength | Marine Grade | Cleans Lubricates Protects : Industrial & Scientific

I know you were asking for Zigbee sensors and mine are ZWave, but I would use the same approach with a Zigbee one.

I should probably open them up and re-spray the inside again before the next rainy season comes around in Arizona, but they’ve been holding up great so far - in the sun and the rain.
