A sensor to detect if something is being hung on a peg board?

I am trying to build a peg board with sensors that can detect the presence of my keys, wallet and other daily items to make sure I’ve gotten organized for the next day. Because this is going to be hung vertically, Im not quite sure what sensor to use for this.

Can I use a laser sensor to detect if the beam is blocked by the item on the peg board?

Can I use some weird kind of weight sensor?

Nonetheless, I use the Adafruit VL53L0X Time of Flight Micro-LIDAR Distance Sensor to remind me that the trash bins are still in the garage.
