Activate light based off of aircraft altitude

I have no idea where to start this next project…I’m hoping one of you guys can help.

I would like to activate a light (or group of lights) when a certain aircraft is in the air. Doesn’t matter where in the world, just if its in the air. My wife is a flight nurse…I think it would be kind of cool to activate a light when her aircraft is in the air.

I assume OpenSky network can help but I have no idea how to start this one.

We will pretend her aircraft is DAL678 (random pick). If its in the air (altitude above 500’?) I’d like to activate a light and maybe some sort of custom card. If it’s not, it should shut it off.

Can anyone help me out with this? Thank you very much.

There is an api https://opensky-network.org/apidoc/

Yes, I see that much. I’m wondering what I need to do to make it a sensor or entity or something I can use inside of HA.

Have you tried a rest sensor?

I assume she is not in the same aeroplane each trip? Will you need some sort of imput to say "today she is on plane DAL678 ?

90% of the time it’s the same tail number. If it does change I can go in and change it manually. I’ll look into the REST sensor now.
