I am using a lot of automations, like anyone else which uses Home Assistant, and… I think it will be a very good idea to add categories to automations in order to filter them better. In this moment, I renamed all my automations by having a prefix as a “category” and everytime when I want to see a certain type of automations, I fill the search field with that name (see screenshots). As far as I seen, I’m not the only one doing this.
Having categories in automations, you don’t need to rename automations by inserting a “category” string in the name, you let the automation with a proper and simple name you like and then, to find your specific automations, you only select a specific cateogry from the list. This field should have all the cateogries added by user and two default cateogry named something smilar to “all” (to show all the autoamtions) and “without category” (to show all the automations which did not had any category selected).
For someone which find this usage harder, you can still use HA in the same way like till now, by not adding any cateogry in your automations, and for some of us who want to use it with categories, just add categories. Or maybe someone whats to use it in both ways, thinking that some automations should not have any category and some automations should be in a specific category.
I think that a better and easy way to implement cateogries, is to put “Choose category” instead of “Description” and to add/remove categories name from that field, something similar to “choose optional tags for this topic” from this forum posting system. I have not seen anybody using “Description” and this is because that field it is only seen inside the automation, which makes it totally not useful (everyone will use the name of automation in order to know what is about in that automation).
As far as the category filter in the automations list, the “Search” field can be used in order to filter automations by cateogry, when you click in the “search” field, it will dropdown a small menu with all the cateogries. This adds the possibility to choose a category from the dropdown menu or just search your strings into that field.
