Adding LifX bulbs

Hi all. Very noob HA user here. I have HAOS running on a mini-PC and have added multiple Zigbee and Bluetooth devices successfully. However, I am struggling with my first WiFi devices – a pair of LifX bulbs.

I see there is a LifX integration. I launched that and it does not discover the bulbs. I can sees in Settings/Network that HA is connected to my WiFi. Interestingly, I can also see the 2 LifX bulbs listed in the WiFi network list.

Is there a step I am missing to make the connection between the bulbs and my WiFi?

Thanks for any help; really sorry if this is a dumb question!
Matt

Screen shots showing I am connected to Wifi, that when I scroll down in access points it shows the LifX bulbs, and the results I get when I try to discover the bulbs using the LifX integration:

Reset the lights by turning them on and off five times. Do this one at a time to avoid confusion of which is which.

They should then be discovered as Homekit devices by both Home Assistant and the LIfx App.

The Homekit integration does not have as many features as the Lifx integration so if you want to be able to do things like set the light state while it is off or use the effects, just ignore this discovery (ignore button in HA, do nothing in the App).

Wait 15 minutes for the Homekit discovery to time out on the light.

Then add the light using wifi and the mobile Lifx app. Follow the app prompts.

After that they should be discovered as Lifx lights by home assistant. If not, you should be able to add them manually using their IP address (reserve this in your router/DHCP server so it does not change).

Do they show in the LifX App on your phone ?

I have been trying to get them to work without using the LifX app on phone. It seems to want a lot of permissions. Might have no other choice but to try it.

Right now, trying to figure out why HA can see them in the list of access points but my router is not seeing them on WiFi (Unifi dream machine - they are not appearing in my network topology or receiving an ip address as far as I can tell.

Ok…I installed the LifX app. I was also able to get the lights connected to WiFi. (Apparently the 8th attempt is the charm!) They came up in HA as well, but the Integration keeps failing. It has retried several times and keeps ending up with the same error.

Used Tom’s 5-on-off trick again and they showed up in HA. So I guess I am good as long as they stay connected. Thanks for the help guys!

I get it… I abandonded LifX about two years ago and now use TP Link-Kasa bulbs and have far fewer issues. The LifX bulbs are in a closet with many other obsolete devices.

You can delete them from the app (and the app) after you have connected them to HA.
