Hi Everyone,
I added a 2nd physical SSD (2 TB) to my HA OS Install on a NUC. I have HA running on the existing 256 GB SSD, and want to continue doing that, but use the new 2 TB SSD as the Media drive for holding Frigate recordings, etc.
According to Frigate instructions here: Installation | Frigate
it says “As of HomeAssistant OS 10.2 and Core 2023.6 defining separate storage for media is supported”. However, I’ve searched all over and I don’t see instructions on how to do this (Only instructions on how to do it with a NAS). Most of the posts I see are for older versions of HA OS/Core, which doesn’t directly support this. I can see the new drive listed under /dev/disk/by-id/ so I know the hardware is working but that’s about as far as I got.
I’m running HA OS 10.4 and Core 2023.8.2
Got it. Thanks so much for your quick response! If someone is able to, it might be helpful to edit the Frigate docs to clarify that with HA OS 10.2, it is possible to use NAS, but not separate local drive.
Thanks again.
Yes, that section is clear if you are looking to use Network storage, but silent about local storage. Then under “Installation” → “Home Assistant Addon” section, it says “As of HomeAssistant OS 10.2 and Core 2023.6 defining separate storage for media is supported.”, which to me implied that it should be possible since adding another HDD is an example of separate storage. Then a ways down it gives a link to the NAS instructions, but again is silent that you can’t do local storage which left me searching and searching for a section that talks about local storage.
Maybe just modify the above sentence to something like “As of HomeAssistant OS 10.2 and Core 2023.6, defining separate NAS storage for media is supported. However separate local/HDD storage is not yet supported if running HomeAssistant OS”.
Should this not be an actual feature request. Surely including network storage is as complex or as simple as adding an additional drive to the local machine. It is not a Frigate thing, this is purely a HA thing.
Like having a mechanical drive or seperate SSD for the database and media storage would mean that it would be easier to scale the system. You could retain all config data on the primary drive.
I have seen posts about auito mapping USB drives as the media folder. If this could be done why could we not have a feature to set a local physical drive as the media storage.
