i have AdGuard installed on my HA, ip address of 192.168.1.229
for Windows machine, i manually set the DNS to this ip of 229 and they are working fine.
what’s the trick for setting up DNS for smart TVs such as Samsung that i cannot manually input the DNS ip?
in AdGuard, i thought this is the way to block my smartTV with ip of 246
Some devices don’t even pick up DNS from DHCP, they use whatever is hardcoded into them. Such organisations do not appear to care about breaking IP networking.
Of course, Google being the biggest culprit I tend to find. If you know the IP then you can block and re-route at router level - but this is a bit more advanced use and not all routers can do it.
just tried at the router level. somehow ads still coming in whenever i watch youtube. ads never show up on the desktop though. i am guessing Ublock Origin is working fine on FireFox to block these youtube ads. guess i have no choice but to get an Android box and install one of the youtube app that auto blocks ads…
Not teaching you to suck eggs but 2 things come to mind:
1: have you set the dns ip in the router under LAN & WAN or just one (assuming your router lets you set both)
2: have you looked at the filtering to see if it’s going through adguard but being allowed?
You could have devices that will ignore the dns set in the router and are hard set, as mentioned above, however if that’s the case you could track down what ip they are using for dns and make a custom router rule to redirect them or completely block them in some cases as a lot of devices that are hard coded will revert to router, however there can be delays and redirecting them is the better option if all else fails.
