Advice on a home security setup

Hi all, I’m completely new to IoT and Haas and would like to build my own home security system but I do have a bunch questions  and would really appreciate some advice from the Haas community.

I have a couple of Raspberry Pi 3’s and an Asus Tinkerboard I can re-purpose but am not sure how best to integrate all the services I need. I’ve also been looking at the Samsung SmartThings hub and was wondering if I need or would gain any advantage of including one in the setup.

Should I standardise on z-wave/Zigbee or Xbee or support all three
If I use the PI is what is the best device to provide the above

Must have

  • Monitor ± 8 motion sensors (range 7 - 9m)
  • Manage the motion sensors as individual units or create zones
  • Include a panic-button option
  • Manually or event based - turn on security lights (10 - 12 LED flood lights)
  • Trigger events (i.e. alarm & or lights & or notifications) based on various criteria time or some other…
  • Control and receive notifications via mobile phone and not rely on a static control panel.
  • Send alarm events to security company
  • We have frequent power failures, so I don’t want to rely on 802.11 wifi for the motion sensors but assume battery backup for the Pi

Following this thread, Have just also bought Pi and looking to do exactly the same.
