Aeotec Gen 5 Z-Stick Migration to 800 Series Controller Help

Hello everyone,

I’m reaching out to see if anyone has successfully migrated from an Aeotec Gen 5 Z-Stick with an SDK version lower than 6.61 to an 800 series Z-Wave Controller.

I’ve recently transitioned from Homeseer to Home Assistant and have successfully integrated most of my devices. Before making the switch from the sluggish and buggy Homeseer software, I purchased a HomeSeer SmartStick G8 Z-Wave 800 Series Long Range (LR) Interface, hoping it would enhance my experience with Homeseer. However, while waiting for the device to arrive, I decided to try Home Assistant and was immediately impressed. I don’t plan on going back to Homeseer after experiencing the benefits of Home Assistant.

I have read that the HomeSeer SmartStick G8 Z-Wave 800 Series Long Range (LR) Interface is compatible with Home Assistant. My main concern now is finding a way to migrate all my devices from my Aeotec Z-Stick Gen 5 Model ZW090-B, which I’ve been using since 2018 or 2019. The only topic I found mentioned that it must have a SDK of 6.61 or higher, otherwise migration is only possible by doing a controller shift.

Any advice or experiences you could share would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

I just did this recently moving from a very old firmware Aeotec 5 to a Zooz 800 series. I opted to do it manually by excluding each device from the old controller then including in the new one. To keep everything running and let me do it slowly I ran both the Zwave js and Zwave js ui addons simultaneously. Unfortunately you can’t run 2 instances of either one but you can run both and have the Zwave integration connect to both. This allowed me to do one device at a time over a few days and except for the short interval when an individual device was being moved, everything stayed available and working. It allowed me to get all my security settings cleaned up in the new controller. Just make sure to name the new version of each device with its old name so entity references all still work. You’ll also need to redo device references since those use device IDs which will change. Wasn’t too painful for my 35 or so devices and now everything is cleaned up and running on Zwave js ui on the 800 controller.

Thanks Kevin, yeah I think that is what i’ll need to do. All of my devices have no automations attached yet as I’ve only just moved to Home Assistant so this shouldn’t be an issue even if i just start from scratch and just use the exclude button on my Aeotec 5 stick and built in battery to run around and exclude everything before starting to include it all on the 800 series controller

I have migrated twice, initially from a 5 series to a 7 and last week to a zooz 800LR. What I did each time was make sure all the sticks were on the latest firmware, then backup the NVM. Then remove old stick insert new one and make sure it is selected in ZWAVE JS then restore the nvm.

Touch wood for me it was as simple as that.

Cheers

Stuart
