Aeotec MultiSensor 6 (Motion Sensor)

HA hates me, LOL

I was all excited to get this sensor as I was ready to get it included and start practicing building more complex automations. Alas, it was not to be.

I tried the inclusion process both from the Aeotec ZWave stick and from the OZWCP and the device would never add. Am I missing some trick to adding this sensor in HA? I added another Smart Switch 6 to the line up without any issues, though.

Anyway, any input, tips or tricks much appreciated.

No, but your relationship with Z Wave seems to be in the dog house.

I have two of these and donā€™t remember doing anything special; I put the sensor in pairing mode by holding down the button, paired it with the stick, inserted the stick into the Pi and rebooted. When it came back up it took a little while but the sensor started to show up. I then shutdown HASS, opened OZWCP, found the sensor and changed it from basic reporting to binary sensor. Saved my changes, shutdown OZWCP and rebooted again.

Waited a bit until all the attributes showed up. Did one more restart of HASS (I think) until everything settled down and the names of the sensor attributes all showed up.

Maybe itā€™s a bad sensor; it does happen. (The old, ā€œItā€™s not you, itā€™s meā€¦ā€ thing.)

True words my friend!!! LOL

I think I will try and pair it with SmartThings. If that works (so as to hopefully establish the sensor works) I will remove it from that system and try and pair it with HA again. Both the Zwave Stick and the sensor go into pairing mode, they just never pair.

I think thatā€™s a great troubleshooting step. If it doesnā€™t pair, you have a better idea if the sensor is bad. If it does, then you can go back and look at what might be going on in HA. Good luck!

Well, it appears that SmartThings is out as a test platform. No native support for it yet there. You can use custom handlers, but I cannot get it to pair there either, though I am not entirely confident I am doing the pairing process properly. It looks like you just have to press the action button once (or twice quickly for secure add) and it should pair. But all mine does is flash green for a couple seconds which the instructions says is the indication of an unsuccessful pairing, but it never seems to make any attempt to pair.

I will have to try again later, I need sleep. Another 11 hr shift tonight, ugggg.

Dude, where do you work? Those are hospital resident hours! Take care.

Well, itā€™s not a hospital, its I.T. It can be a rough schedule but I only work about 14 days out of the month. So it has its perks, if you survive, LOL

I have a Physicians Assistant in the family and a good friend of mine is a Registered Nurse, so I got good company for the working hours and we can relate and keep each other going and on track.

Okay, after some sleep and a little time before work, I tried this pairing process again. The instructions state:

If your Z-Stick is plugged into a gateway or a computer, unplug it.
Take your Z-Stick to your MultiSensor.
Press the Action Button on your ZStick
Press the Action Button on your MultiSensor.

Thatā€™s it! But here is the odd thing. The last information states you can test if the sensor has been successfully included into your ZWave network byā€¦wait for itā€¦pressing the action button. If the inclusion is successful the LED will be solid green for a few seconds. If it was not, it will blink green for a few seconds.

Okay, remember, the instructions above, press the action button ONCE (assuming, it does not say otherwise). If I press it ONCE, it blinks green, like it was unsuccessfully added, yet I am attempting to start the inclusion process, not check it.

I donā€™t ā€˜thinkā€™ itā€™s the ZStick as I added an additional smart switch today as well after trying to add the multisensor 6. So there appears to be something else here, the sensor is not going into inclusion mode. Whether or not that is a result of a bad sensor or a bad process I am unable to determine at this point. I am suspect of a bad sensor, though, but clearly, I cannot rule it out so its still on the table. But I can reset the sensor using the instructions, I can check for both normal and secure inclusion. The only thing I have been unable to do is initiate the inclusion process.

The instructions indicate you can add the device either normally or securely so it would seem the choice is irrelevant, you just would perhaps be limited to the parameters you could make use of.

I should have bought two of them so I could confirm all of this, but it is what it is.
