So i have the aeotec zwave stick and a UZB Z-Wave PLUS USB stick by Z-Wave.Me. The UZB was given to me for free, so i might go with this. But my question is with either stick working, do I even need a Wink or smart things hub since i have the stick option in HA?
What is the purpose of the having the zwave stick and WInk or ST hub?
As you can tell im a noob but liking the setup so far.
You don’t need a hub as the zwave stick will work as your hub.
Thanks for the info! if the zwave signal lags across to other areas of the house, then what is a good suggestion to get it extended?
Aeotec sells a Z-Wave extender but I’m pretty sure the best way to extend range is to add another device closer to the destination but still in range of the controller. AFAIK z-wave devices act as repeaters as well.
Ahhh! Understood. Thank you.
They do, but only certain types - you want something that is either always on or hardwired. ZWave light switches, for example. Great excuse for WAF (wife acceptance factor): “But buying more switches makes the network run better!”
Which is funny, because the one device I have that constantly disconnects is a Linear Z-Wave light switch. Yet right next to that switch is 2 doors, both with battery operated door/window sensors, that have worked flawlessly for 2+ years.
I’m not saying you are wrong, just that I really need to replace that switch for my own sanity.
I’ll trade you for a garage door tilt sensor that toggles two switches whenever I open it.
No tie in from HA because no automations link the sensor to either switch. What’s more, is that there is an identical switch - make/model/fw vers/bought at same time and right next to one of the ones that toggle - that isn’t affected at all. Two switches are different brands and types and on two different floors.
I still can’t figure it out. In the meantime I had to create an automation to turn one of them back on (Dryer is plugged into it and is always on; using the plugin switch to monitor current).
Not even sure where to look…
