After restoring a backup, Home Assistant isn't coming back up

I’m using a Home Assistant Yellow, with an HAOS install. I accidentally removed my Matter configuration (long story – trying to get a device connected again) and lost all of my carefully curated device names, areas and tags.

So, I thought, ‘Ah, this is what backups are for!’ I restored my “settings and history” from the last automatic backup and HA restarted itself.

However, it’s not coming back up. That was half an hour ago. I can ping the device, but there’s nothing there when I try to connect to it with my browser.

How long does this take? There’s furious activity in the yellow and green lights, so I’m nervous about just turning it off and on again.

It came back up (with my matter settings restored), but took a good, long time. It normally takes only a couple of minutes to restart HA. Can someone explain to me what happened there? Does it come up in some special “restore mode” and only then downloads the backup and restores?

It takes some time to write all the files from the backup to your device and is dependent on the performance of the system and storage used and the size of the backup.

  • A restore is way more intensive than a simple restart.
  • If your backup was encrypted, decryption increases the restore time considerably.
  • You’re running a Yellow, not an i7 PC. If you have a cm4 in it, then it’ll run at raspberry pi4 speeds, which aren’t great.
  • There is only a 10 minute difference between your first & second post. 40 minutes to restore sounds about right based on the info you provided

Yeah, that’s about right: Roughly 40-45 minutes. It was just long enough for me to start getting seriously nervous and post for help. It was the first time I had ever tried the restore feature, outside of changing hardware (when you expect things to take a while). It was just suprising to me, is all. Might be worth having some language in the UI to set expectations (“can take a while” or somesuch).
