Alarm clock ideas?

I haven’t started a new Home Assistant project in about a month. So I am Jonesing for something else. And the clock next to my bed has started flickering. So:

What are some good alarm clock or bedroom clock ideas that work with home assistant?

I would read about any you are willing to share. I would love some of these features:

  • Something I can read without really walking up. Digital clock that is slightly backlit.
  • Something that can show a status or state from home assistant. This could be something like a display, or neopixels.
  • Something that works with esphome would be great. I love that software. Adding a temperature sensor or a special button would be easier with esphome.

I honestly don’t need a speaker or alarm. My kids wake me up at 6:30 every morning and if I need an alarm, I will use my phone.

It does not need to be durable, but ideally it is at least in a case.

I have a 3D printer.

Anything else interesting that I should consider?

Something like this:

It could show all sorts of HA information, not just time.

Hang one of these on your wall. : -

or as you have a 3D printer : -

You say you don’t need an alarm but your title suggests otherwise ???

They look neat but do they qualify for:

They would seem to be difficult to read when half asleep.

Very true. If I were to shop for a clock to go on a night stand, I would shop for an alarm clock, and I would just never set the alarm. It seems like an area where language guides design.

That is very cool. I will read this thoroughly.

Those are both very interesting projects. I haven’t seen that second one, and I forgot about the first one.

This post is more just brain storming, or “inspiration finding”. I was hoping those bullets give a good description of what I was expecting, but there’s no reason to limit links to stuff that meets all those needs. Maybe there is a way to combine a few ideas into something that I could use. For example, maybe I would have just a small 7 segment clock on one corner, but still try to spell out different notifications with the letters? IDK.

Anyone seen AWTRIX? Looks relevant as well for this as well.

That looks slick. I wonder if I can manage to do it that cleanly

This looks pretty slick too. I like the form factor and the mechanical switches:

I would rather it be driven via local wifi, of course. There is a js library that talks to one of these over BT. Maybe I could strap an esp32 and figure out the commands for that.

It is also quite bright.

Perhaps this is helpful to make custom component for HA https://github.com/Kwintenvdb/homebridge-divoom

What did you go with?
I’m interested in a projected display that shows some non-time data.
So far I’ve experimented with a SSD1331 controlled with ESPHome and a ‘smart phone projector’.
Current issues are

  • ESPHome has no option to flip the image, at least for this OLED
  • Screen burn, it happens pretty fast
  • Projects small
  • Lense has to be quite far from the screen, part of the projection appeal was having less of a footprint

I’m considering a transparent PMOLED or an optical prism

Oh man, I didn’t ever post my cyberdeck back here?! Here it is:

It’s running a whole pi and it uses an esphome for the backlight and some buttons.

It isn’t exactly what I was expecting when I started, but it is dim enough to sleep by, and much more powerful.
