Alert when motion stops after x minutes (elderly care)

Hi,

Been using HA for a few months so definitely not a pro and hoping for some help please.

I have elderly in laws living on their own and I am thinking of implementing a basic HA install at their house to try to monitor, as much as possible, that they are up and about.

I would like to implement a MMWAVE sensor in the bathroom that say if they enter the bathroom and stay for longer than x minutes then I get alerted. Any idea please on how to implement the automation? Probably someone would suggest a door sensor when door is open or close but that would imply I have to rely on them to ‘be part’ of the automation which isn’t a good idea. I would like that the automation works independent of them having to do something specific for it to work.

Another automation I would like to create is through another MMWAVE sensor installed in the corridor. If between 4am and 8am I don’t detect movement in the corridor (i.e. they did not get out of the bedroom) then another alert is sent.

BTW - I did get them a proper around the neck product with button that can detect falls etc. but sometimes they forget to wear it so I thought I would implement a second layer of security.

Thanks all !

For you corridor a motion sensor (PIR?) might do the job better than a occupancy sensor, as you wanna detect motion, not occupancy.

The automation itself is pretty easy. You can have as a trigger your occupancy sensor on for X minutes, then send a message.

You can think about a bed sensor also. It is quite easy to adapt a door sensor with a car seat sensor to detect if someone is at the bed. Those sensors are not that expensive.

True, good point.

Thanks for this. I need to test the mmw sensor as if say the person doesn’t move for 1 sec then I don’t want it to trigger as if he left the room.

Will look into that. Thank you
