There are still many things that can be done in HA, especially with the open systems, like ZigBee, Z-Wave, Matter and WiFi.
And at one point there were no integration for Alexa either.
IoT is a big world and you have to define a boundary somewhere. The logical place is to do it when you hit one boundary set by another system, and especially when you need to learn another system deeply to go further.
Open source and free systems have to especially do this, but if it is a wanted solution, then someone is probably making it and that person or someone else might document it too and make a guide about it.
You might have to search for the guide though and it might be placed in a site for support for that other system, since it is there the code is implemented.
I’m curious, do you represent NabuCasa or HA in an official capacity? I have found a feature that is lacking, did due diligence to document it, and have spent half the afternoon defending why it can’t be done or why I should just do it myself.
If you speak in an official capacity and don’t feel this is important enough to fund working on, kindly say that without wasting my time making excuses, otherwise let everyone else vote without thinking it’s not possible.
I do not work for NabuCasa.
And I will let your feature request be then.
I will end give it a vote, even though it will be for nothing, because the HA team do not exactly like cloud services that can be closed/paywalled/ hanged with out notice, nor companies with privacy issues nor closed system to integrate too.
On top of that the HA team is well on its way to develop its own voice assistant that ticks all the boxes above in the right way, and the Alexa integration is old and some Alexa coder will probably soon co e up with something better than the HA team can make.
So extra votes will not do much here, not even if you get the most votes on the forum, because the HA team choose their business direction based on their own wishes.
So +1 to your request
Liking the cloud services is something but implementing the functionality for the user’s sake is another, right?
Nabucasa based Alexa / Google Home integrations are eventually connected to cloud. Also, there are many others using self hosted skills and exposing their entities to Alexa/Google Home using documented steps.
So, we are just saying that, whatever skill the user is relying on (either Nabucasa behind the scene or self hosted one), this request should belong to that skill, right?
@orrious , did you find any official Alexa documentation about sending notifications?
I voted for this request too. I think it’s going to be very helpful! Even if HA team has their own strategy when it comes to voice assistants and so on, the Amazon assistants are the most popularm ones and will continue to be for a very long time in my mind, and keep supporting it makes a lot of sense. If that’s an easy thing for a developers team and you’ll make some people happy, why don’t simply do that?
My vote for this too - I am afraid it will still take a while till HA speach recognition can keep up with Alexa. Until then it would be great to have Alexa send notifications.
Unfortunately Notifymyecho only works with english speaking countries - which excludes most european countries
This would be great not to rely on third party app…
Especialy for european user!
I am wondering if anybody as found a way to perform this (even with third party skill) for european user?
Notifymyecho only works with english language.
Nevertheless, NabuCasa is offering an Alexa integration.
This feature implies that a smart home skill is created on amazon side to recover the HA devices into the Alexa app and allow voice control… If this feature could be part of it, that would be a nice way to use amazon devices with persistent notification instead of only tts.
There is code written by NabuCasa hosted on amazon side see extract of nabu casa site:
For me one of the two drivers for the nabuCasa subscription (I am not yet? part of HA Cloud subscription…):
- easy access from anywhere
- easy integration of voice assistants
They are even advertising it:
Thus I see no reason why this request could not be taken seriously by Home Assistant or NabuCasa devs, even if most of the code has to be hosted in a dedicated Alexa skill…
This kind of feature could be another argument to subscribe to NabuCasa cloud solution…
The fact that assist is being developped is very good, but what about all the already existing hardwares (google nest, amazon echo, etc…) It would be a nonsense to throw them to the bin because assist becomes available.
For the “newcomer” for sure it can “prevent” to buy a closed device, but for those already equipped, a cloud access remains a good way to interract with HA!
