Some sensors measure the amount using for example distance (water tank, oil tank) rather than an always increasing counter. These sensors will have an error component, so the value can decrease slightly as well as increase, though the overall trend is in one direction. Allow for reading errors so that the sensor is not reset by a small change in the wrong direction (a threshold value?) but that refilling a tank will reset it.
