Any info/experience with Ting Fire (Ting electric/electromagnetic) sensor?

FYI (double post), the Ting device was provided to me for free by State Farm and it came with 3 years of free monitoring. I didn’t think much about the device until we had a power outage and I got a notification from the App. And then after a whole house generator was installed, I also got notifications that the device knows when the house is being supplied by generator power and sent notifications about utility power loss, and then when power was restored, but running on the generator, and when utility power is restored. So, this device definately has proven useful. However, the free service reverts to a paid subscription soon and I’m also looking for another solution, even if it’s DIY.

UPDATE: as of March 05, 2025, State Farm insurance will continue to pay for the Ting sensor subscription as long as a customer has a qualifying home owners policy.

Call your State Farm agent, they might be willing to extend the subscription. Let me know if that works. My “Ting” is in the mail, so my clock is just now starting.

Interesting that the free subscription expires for you. I just received notice of it from State Farm and there is no expiration listed at all. Maybe it’s a different locale, or there’s a newer policy now. Or, maybe I’m bad at reading lol, though I did scour through the whole website looking for fees.

Can you elaborate on the “privacy reasons”? I looked in the ToS and I didnt see anything that stands out to me.

The message we got from Ting today was that they have an API on their list but have not seen enough interested to elevate the priority. If you have Ting and would use an integration API, please reach out to their support [[email protected]] and let them know its important to you.

I just sent them a gentle request, thanks for the rallying cry!

Under Security and Privacy, it says “Whisker Labs shares summary counts of power quality events and any identified fire hazards with State Farm. If a fire hazard is identified, a summary of the hazard is shared with State Farm.”

From this page:

That’s really the whole point of an insurance company providing them to their insured.

(I know you arent the person that originally said it) But I wouldn’t consider that a privacy concern, it’s just the purpose of it. Insurance companies are not giving away monitoring devices just to be nice.

One more user that is going to receive this device. I did send an email to the “help” requesting the API access.

That’s great, can’t hurt. For me, they sent a generic, “We’ll get back to you about this!” email and never did.

They probably sent the same email to me, if all I would suggest that if anyone is interested to send them an email

The Ting team has considered the development of a Smart Home API, and this item is on the list for consideration. Interest to date has not elevated the API to the top of the list yet.

Oh, that’s much better than what I got!

Thank you for contacting Ting Customer Care!
We aim to respond within 2 business days. Your inquiry is important to us, and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible in the order it was received.

Hi there, just added my request to see an API from Ting. I received a generic thanks for contacting us email. Hopefully if they see enough interest they’ll prioritize development at some point.

Just received the same email as mentioned above:

just sent them an email expressing interest. i would have expected there to be more interest given how long this discussion has been going

anyone know if they ever came up with anything?
