Anyone else having problems with their Awair Element today?

I noticed my air quality sensors went out earlier today. Sure enough the mobile Awair app wasn’t working either.
Looks like it has been having intermittent issues since early this morning.
I tried power cycling the device, but that hasn’t changed anything. I’m wondering if they pushed a bad firmware update.

Does anyone else have an Awair Element? If so, has it been working for you today?

The same here with my awair (running firmware 1.3.0).
I’ve this problem already a few days now.

Erik

Mine also is running firmware 1.3.0

I tried factory reseting it and that did not help. (At first after I did the factory reset it seemed like it might not be able to even do the setup, but I was able to get that working. But after that, it’s back to it’s behavior of pulsing green light, not connecting to the app, and sometimes wrong sensor data being displayed)

On my router I can see that it is dropping on and off wifi (which I believe corresponds to the pulsing green light)
On my DNS server I can see that it is looking up timeserver.awair.is, messaging.awair.is, and ota.awair.is, so it at least is trying to talk to stuff when it is connected.

@_Richard Do you also still experience issues with the Awair Element?
I’m facing still issues, it seems connecting/disconnecting all the time from the wifi.

Erik

Yes, I am still having issues like you describe. I have sent a support request to Awair and am waiting on a response.

Did you ever get an answer? I see this behavior on the Wair app, but Home Assistant doesn’t seems to be affected.

Awair support believe it is my WiFi access point and want me to try another one, which I haven’t had the chance to do yet. I’m skeptical as I don’t have this problem with any other device.
For me, both Awair app and Home assistant are affected. I see lots of missing data points in my graphs and occasional errors in the logs saying home assistant can’t connect to the Awair.

When you say home assistant isn’t affected for you, do you mean that you get a continuous graph of data points without missing points and no errors in logs about home assistant occasionally not being able to connect to the Awair?

Yeah, no missing data in HA, only the Awair app saying device disconnected often

I have the same issue as many others with the Awair dropping WiFi for hours/days at a time with the light pulsing and I strongly suspect there is an underlying hardware/firmware issue with the WiFi on the Element that would require a replacement device, if that is the case and Awair were to admit to it it would mean replacing a huge number of devices which is in my opinion why they don’t respond. Mine is REV 3E if anyone wants to compare revisions. I got it on eBay so no warranty / support.

I setup an alternate wireless access point with a different SSID and factory reset the Awair Element and connected to it. So far the Awair Element seems to be working fine with it. (The Awair app is working, I’m not seeing gaps in my data in either the app, or in Home Assistant)

  • The alternate access point is similar in distance from the Awair as the original access point.
  • The alternate access point is older technology than the original access point.
  • The original access point setup had two access points that you could roam between (however, I had used the management software to “lock” the Awair Element to one of the access points to see if that made a difference and it didn’t)
  • Running an alternate access point seems ridiculous but I don’t have an alternative for now.

I have read that creating a 2.4g only SSID can help if your router supports a guest network or multiple SSID.
