Assist - Talking to Home Assistant - how to open the curtains on ...?

Home Assistant 2023.5.1
Supervisor 2023.04.1

Through Voice assistants, I can open and close the curtains, but I can’t open or close to the desired position, how can I do this?

  • I say, open the curtains in the living room - the curtains open
  • I say close the curtains in the living room - the curtains are closing
  • I say, open the curtains in the living room at 50 - the curtains do not open, the command execution error
  • I say, close the curtains in the living room by 50 - the curtains do not close, the command execution error

It depends on what your curtain device supports. Voice prompts aside, can you control the percentage of your curtains from the HA device directly? If not then you can’t do it via voice either.

I use simple “Add A Motor” controllers on my curtains, which is a simple on/off switch and wrote my own cover template and just simply say “Hey Siri, set bedroom curtains to 50%”.

I can set the position of the curtains through my voice assistant Alice. In Russia, there is a cool voice assistant Alice, who can hear a person in very noisy environments, who has an anti-noise filter implemented, but I want to use a local voice assistant and not depend on cloud ones. For example, I use Rhasspy + ReSpeaker Core v2 and it works. I was interested in trying out this innovation in HA, but it doesn’t work

May or may not help, but with my blinds, I have a switch enabled for them that’s On/Off. Off is closed 100% and On is Open 50%

So a simple switch could be something to try, since voice assistants seem to understand those commands better

Voice assistants will understand a cover template far better. You could create switches for your most popular percentages, but it’s limiting, a cover is supported by at all the voice assistants as covers, they will do whatever you code them to do.

I have noticed the same problem.

My covers are z-wave bali blinds controlled by Home Assistant. I am using Nabu Casa to then give Alexa control over them (and other things).

I can say “Alexa office blinds 50” and my blinds open 50%.
If I use Home Assistants own voice assistant (on my phone), it responds with “Sorry, I couldn’t understand that.” I have tried variations on the command and have not found anything that works.

With Home Assistant is acting as the go-between, why can’t it do something that Alexa can do?
