Anybody got any ideas on how to replace this lot and keep the less technically inclined happy (in other words still have regular switches that work when the network is down)?
I can only find single gang dimmer switches that are AU approved and there is only three of them in the blakadder AU list.
I would suggest Shelly devices in-wall. They work OOTB with MQTT and HA over Wifi.
Yes I’ve used Shelly1 for two way switches but not dimmers. Is there a shelly dimmer and how do they work with a wall switch? Note on these three wall switches there are 6 dimmer and two normal switches. Difficult to pack all that into the same space using smart devices.
The link I posted has the dimmers I believe. I’ve not used them myself, so can’t comment on how they work, sorry.
ok thanks, will investigate.
There are six dimmers, but you have heaps of space there given its spread over three gangplates.
The dimmer would actually allow you to reduce the space taken up by switching as the button and physical dimmer function are one and the same, i.e. you add a momentary switch and you can hold the button down to fade the lighting, or just push to turn on/off.
Yes just watched Dr Zzs video on them. https://youtu.be/6x7_2efDNNc
I think they’ll do the job. Just need the right button switch now. Or do Shelly sell the wall switch also?
I have used the Brilliantsmart switches and dimmer mechs for single and two-way switches and dimmers. The first batch I converted to ESPhome, the later ones I couldn’t, so they are still talking to Tuya cloud. For the tuya ones, if internet is down, they only the main switch (the one actually connected to the load) works.
The ones on ESPHome work with internet down of course.
I want to avoid Tuya. Was it because they were resistant to Tuya-convert or because they didn’t have ESP8266 chips in them?
I have had pretty good experience with Zigbee so far. Predominantly IKEA Tradfri bulbs, wall plugs, controllers. They work and work well with my Home Assistant with Zigee2MQTT + zzh 2652 coordinator.
Next, I am looking to automate my lights, and instead of replacing the wall sockets (Clipsal), I am in favor of getting smart switches… Shelly seems to fit the bill…
I have a fairly reasonable WiFi setup (Unifi APs), so we should be fine on that front. How are other’s experiences with Shelly here ?
How is integration with HA ? I will be looking to get rid of their cloud functionality for offline mode …
One more question, how do I know if I have neutral wiring or not ?
Shelly don’t, but ozsmartthings that @kanga_who linked to has options to bundle shelly’s with a push button. Unfortunately it looks I’ve just bought the last two
Their pricing is spot on so it might be worth dropping them an email to see if their getting more stock ( then letting us know their response )
In Aus, neutral should ALWAYS be black ( except for when its not, then its blue )
Experience of Shelly has been great here.
Same.
I think their upcoming Pro line of products will go banana’s
It should only ever be blue in flexible cords to appliances. It’s a relic of the old standards.
When they wired our switches (recent built ~2019), I noted we have a pair of red + black cables, so that means we should be good to order some Shellys.
Next question, do we order Shelly 1L for single gang, and Shelly 2.5 for dual gangs switches? and similarly combo of 1 and 2 for points with 3 or 4 wall switches ?
Yep already in contact with them and asked if they supply momentary button switches.
SparkyDirect is another good source. It’s where I’ve bought stuff for my electrician to put in.
Correct.
Have been using Shelly 1L’s here and am beyond impressed.
Yes would accept Tuya-convert. Earlier ones were fine. I am not into taking them apart to connect up serial wires etc
