Australia - Electrically Certified Hardware

have you checked to see what the name of the wlan is? Are you just assuming it’s wlan0 ?

Well it seems that the RPi can’t find the wireless adaptor at all… wondering if it’s a hardware fault. I’ve never ttried to use the wifi on this RPi before as it was always connected by ethernet

Try it out just connecting to your regular home Access Point.

sudo raspi-config

when I go into raspi-config it again tells me that there is no wireless interface found

What model pi?

3B (not the plus)

cat /proc/cpuinfo |grep Revision

With these Sonoff products, can they operate in conjunction with wall switches? That is, can I turn them off at the light switch, but then turn them back on using HA? Or are you forced to have the switch on at all times and purely use the app?

That gives me: a22082

if you deprive them of electricity, they will not work at all.

Yep that is a 3B - see https://elinux.org/RPi_HardwareHistory

you could wire the wall switch into a GPIO of the Sonoff to get switching locally and via HA

So I’m wondering if the wifi adaptor of this RPi is dead… Might be easiest to just go and get a new RPi3B+…

Being in Australia, that would no doubt require a sparky who would probably be very hesitant to play with the insides of the device. Hmm… I suppose I could put a GPIO on it first and see if he would be happy with that, being unaware that I’ve modified it.

The other thing is… is it a locally purchased Sonoff or Chinese import? The ones from China I understand don’t have the certification for Aus in the first place. I did red that somewhere they are stocking them with Aus certification… at a fairly high mark-up

Locally, I was looking at the DUAL/R2 that have been certified here. Marked up for sure, but still way cheaper than say the Fibaro Z-wave in wall options - however I believe they do work out of the box being able to be switched on/off at the wall while still having access through home automation systems. Sadly, they run over $100 just to control to switches.

It seems that a re-flash of the SD card has resolved the wifi adaptor issue… trying the whole process again. fingers crossed!

EDIT: all worked sweet this time

Posted this on another thread but thought it might be worthwhile here.

Just a heads up everyone. The ‘clone’ of the Mirabella products by Brilliant Lighting (e.g. their smart plug you can get from Bunnings as well as the wifi bloges) are about to expand their range quite a bit. I found on an electrical wholesaler I buy stuff from the following:

  • wifi dimmer
  • wifi four outlet power board
  • smart sensor camera with speaker
  • reed switch

And so on. Not sure if this link will work but you can check it out here . Hopefully a lot of (or all) of these products can also be flashed to work with HA. Exciting that we’re finally getting some low cost stuff in Australia. Their RGB bulbs on that site are $24, cheaper even that the Mirabella K-mart ones.

Interesting, hopefully AUS will get some cheap goodies to play with

I was in an electrical wholesaler yesterday picking up some bits and noticed that Clipsal now have their own range of Z-Wave gear… the hub (and a photo I saw of the GUI) looks remarkably similar to Vera… I’m thinking it might be a re-badge. I was in a hurry so didn’t inquire about pricing
