I’m having a really hard time figuring out the new “backups” thing.
I set it up but I don’t want to waste space with a daily backup, my config has been stable and at this points only changes if I have to replace a device or updates have breaking changes. I also don’t need to spend ages slowly backing up the whole system if only 1 thing changes.
Backups are also now PAINFULLY slow and taking up OBSCENE amounts of disk space - the single new backup is taking up MORE space than the last 100 backups of the various addons/core that I have! Surely this is some kind of mistake?! I can’t even open it to see what is taking up SO much space…because it seems to be encrypted with some proprietary thing that no normal archive software can understand.
How do I have it only make automatic backups when updating HA or an addon, of only the thing which is actually changing? And why are they so massive?
Do backups using an automation or add-on if the new stuff does not work for you.
However a warning, Incremental backups like you describe will not help you in the case of a disk failure, you will be starting over…
Its a VM with RAID backed disks and backups of the host done periodically – the only time I need the HA backups is if an update goes sideways or I find a problem (e.g. at one point found deconz couldn’t pair with smart-vents past a year old version) then I need to revert to a known working version of that addon in question.
If something happens that I lose multiple disk failure on my NAS, multiple disk failure on the NAS at my parents house, AND the offline every few months USB drive all at the same time…most likely it was so disastrous that I won’t have a house or car or anything else working in “how do I stay alive at all” mode and computers no longer matter.
