Backup SD-Card Hassio on Windows?

or use the refresh button

maybe it works for you, it never did for me or anybody i know

Well it works for everyone I know! Does that make us even?

I’m not referring to refreshing the browser window I’m talking about pressing the Hassio refresh button. It’s never NOT worked for me although I almost never have to restore a snapshot.

The refresh button worked. I just couldn’t find it

Yeah that’s what I suspected! Glad you got it sorted.

I came here to check what to do after a very strange HA meltdown.
I just want to confirm it worked for me too.

One small pointer that might help others. After copying the snapshot it didn’t show up for me even after pressing F5 to refresh the browser but (luckily I noticed) there is a refresh button on top right hand corner of the HA Snapshot webpage which did it for me.

I have to say for all its other imperfections  the snapshot facility is quite brilliant.

EDIT: just make sure you do them AND copy them off to somewhere else (It’s a shame that can’t be automated…)!

It can be automated actually… it’s a third-party addon that backs up to Dropbox. Add this repo…

I have also had no issues with snapshots. After copying them back you have to use the refresh icon and also refresh the browser window.

I have an automation that makes the snapshot and copies it to Dropbox every night and keeps the last 5. Simple.

I have found restoring a snapshot works best on a fresh install and have had a few odd things happen when restoring on a running system.

That add-on looks great.
I don’t use Dropbox, it’s a shame nothing exisits for OneDrive.

I decided to simply schedule a job every time I logon to my Windows PC that runs a Robocopy from my Pi to OneDrive (I already had a nightly HA automation to create a snapshot).

so get a free dropbox account

Obviously I thought of that but it seemed like a sledgehammer to crack a nut when I already have OnrDrive and Robocopy on a PC I log on to every day.

Not at all! automated is always better. Otherwise, one day, you’ll want to restore and you won’t have the backup. It’s free dude. (It’s also remote to your PC/Pi. Double Tripple win)

My method is automated
HA is on a Pi and an automation to create snapshot runs at 3AM.
I log on to my windows PC in the morning.
Robocopy job runs automatically to copy snapshot from my Pi to OneDrive.

And I have it so that it opens the cmd window too, so I get a nice feeling of reassurance when I see it actually doing the copy. Double Triple Quadruple win :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

If all your backups are in your house good luck with that.

You even said this:

but you want to argue about the obvious solution…

Err… OneDrive is both in my house AND in the cloud. (Which incidentally means the snapshots also get backed up as a part of my normal backup routine. Double Triple Quadruple Quintuple win.

I’m not and never was arguing, just trying to explain why I didn’t bother with Dropbox when I have an equivalent solution without it. (Which others might have also found useful.)

If I wanted to argue I’d say you were the one arguing.

Has anyone figured out why restoring snapshots doesn’t work? I get to the Wipe & Restore step and then let it sit for several hours…nothing. Having my system seize up was frustrating but having snapshots and not being able to use them in 10x worse. Please help!

Snapshot restore is not working even for me. I’ve used the Dropbox addon in order to create snapshots and save it to Dropbox. It was working. Then my SD crashed and i decided to buy a new one.
Fresh Hassio installation - put the snapshot in the backup folder - restarted home assistant - wipe and restore snapshot and bum…something happens and a 404 error on the home assistant web page. Onboarding error i tryed to correct…and now i’ve an onboarding loop on the welcome webpage. But anyway if i go to the config folder i can’t see the “restored” files. configuration.yaml and others are with values of the fresh hassio installation. So no snapshot has been rebuilt.
By the way, is there a way to open this tar.gz file of the snapshot in order to take only configuration groups automation files? These are around 1 year of work for me…

Yes it’s just a zip file so any unzip will work. It’s about 3 levels deep of unzipping and is the largest zip in the snapshot.

When i try to unzip “homeassistant.tar.gz” (with 7z) it gives me an error:
cannot open file as archive
it’s around 1 gb and it should have a passoword (as i was giving a password when creating the full snapshot)

Is there a way to automatically save only configuration groups automations files? I’ve others 3 home assistant with a big work inside each one and feel unsafe with snapshots.
90% of my job is only inside configuration files

Other people have issues similar when they encrypt with a password. I have never used one for the snapshots.
