Backup way to big

Tried posting on Discord as well, but no response. Hope someone can help. I am running on an Rpi 4b

Tuesday this week I get a warning that I was out of space on my memory card (32Gb) and I noticed the backup was more than doubled in size of what it used to be. Have considered the use of an SSD, so I went to the store and purchased a Lenovo TP 6 with 1Tb storage. I moved my installation to the SSD. Before I moved it the system reported 953Gb free space on the SSD and after installation I was down to 850. I deleted all backups and made a new one, and it came in at 7Gb. After that the size of the backup keeps getting bigger and bigger and even it I make a minimum backup with only home assistant settings it shows that the size is 7.71Gb. Is there any way to solve this? Do a fresh install on memory card, move to disk, download the backup from google drive and reinstall? Or will I then only “backup” the problem again? Any suggestions?

any answer appreciated.

Check your recorder settings.

See here:

I have no excluded a lot of entities and more from recorder and even deleted the v2.db file, and the backup was reduced from 8,5Gb to 8. I still belive there must be a hickup somewhere. After running HA for 2+ years and the experience the backup to more than double from one day to the next. That can not be from recorder only, unless one sensor is going crazy, and I do not belive that has happened either.

My HA is over 6 year old, and my backup is still less then 500Mb. Do you include media ?

Media is excluded, so I believe something is wrong. When I find time I will probably do a fresh install and then try to restore from backup and see what happens.

Why not copy the backup file to a computer, extract the contents and determine which file or folder is the culprit?

This is what I get, and when I open the homeassistant.tar.gz it contains 1406 lines. Thats all I can read out of it.

With 7zip, you can sort on size. You should look what takes most space.

  1. Get 7zip or any other useful program (dont know if winzip is capable enough)
  2. Search for the biggest file in the homeassistant.tar.gz

Where am I going wrong, cant open the file

is it encrypted maybe? do an unencrypted backup for debugging (for now)

This means:

  • remove the backup files (to make sure you have enough space free)
  • do a manual full backup
    do steps 1+2 now.

TY, It looks like the Tapo app is downloading a lot of videos and put it in under Storage. Now I need to find out how to get rid of it.

After deleting videos, backup is 81.8 Mb. Thanks for all help
