Hi,
I hope i am at the right place for my question…
My network setup is as follows: i have a few TP-Link and Shelly devices behind an ISP (aka mediocre) modem/router (say LAN1), then the rest of my network (say LAN2) is behind another router whose WAN is connected on LAN1. So LAN1 basically has devices i don’t trust so much plus my main routeur.
Where should HA be: LAN1 or LAN2? And why (so i learn something)?
Hi Jean, welcome to the community. From your explanation I think there is no issue of which network HA has to be. It doesn’t matter because the router LAN1 is the primary network and LAN2 is a wired Wi-Fi extenders. So you can connect HA to any network and you will get access to all the devices in the complete network.
Thank you for the quick reply!
I was not very clear in my post but the router between LAN1 & LAN2 has a firewall setup as if LAN1 was the open internet, so for instance no connection can be initiated from LAN1 to LAN2 without change to that firewall. Since LAN2 is more secure i would rather have HA in LAN2, but my concern was how well that will work with most of my devices in LAN1.
Since HA is based as a device run locally, it wont fair good having two different networks. But then again it also depends upon the devices and integration. For eg: Tuya integration which finds devices with the cloud credentials or amazon alexa which again has the same logic. In such things even if the device is located in a different network, i guess it wont matter with the integration. So I think you should have a very planned deployment of not just HA but also these smart devices.
