Bed Presence for ESPHome by Elevated Sensors

Since having installed this bed presence sensor it gets done here only when both bedsides go to occupied. No false positives so far.

For this to work I did also configure triggers for each individual bedside. If only one of us is getting up briefly nothing happens. If both bedsides go to unoccupied within a certain time frame different things happen in and around our house.

I do some things depending on whether my phone is on the charger, between certain times. You can combine that with a bed sensor. If you have an iPhone and use the sleep tracking feature, there’s also the focus mode as a sensor from the companion app (e.g. having sleep mode on).

Putting the security alarm system in perimeter mode while everyone is in bed is a good automation to have.

cool project! any plans on releasing a gerber files for a DIY version?

I have the same bed as you. As far as i can see, i do not have access to the top side of the slats, because the box spring mattress is sown on top of them. How did you install your sensors?

It’s not in our current plans since there are already great DIY tutorials out there. Our primary goal is to offer an alternative that eliminates some of the challenges with the DIY route.

Just wanted to share a link to my thread that goes over my experience with these sensors here:

After a lot of experimenting/troubleshooting (because of my mattress/configuration, not the sensor…what he’s built absolutely saved me what would surely have been many more hours of work) everything is working phenomenally. Very very pleased.

I tried placing an order, but site tells me it is out of stock. When do you expect it to be back? Very keen to try it. Thank you.

Our next batch is expected in early February. Sign up for wait-lists to get notified when items are back in stock. We also have a banner at the top of our website that will include updates.

I signed up to be notified when the product is in stock. Not sure if this is the waiting list you’re referring?

I also wanted to ask if this can be used with a bed that instead of having slats has a one flat surface under the mattress - upholstered bed base?

Like this one: https://colchonesaznar.com/en/upholstered-bases/44-20309-upholstered-3d-mesh-base-reinforced-with-5-cross-bars.html#/colors-white/mattresses_and_bases_measurements-90x190cm

Yep, that’s the list I’m referring to.

The sensor strips need something to stick to, so I’m not sure that bed frame work as is. It looks like it might be a good candidate for the upcoming box spring mount kit though.

Oh, what is that mount kit? Can you share a bit more details so I could get an idea, specifically if I should wait for it more or go for the one you will have available in Feb?

The mounting kit includes a thin plastic strip and a cradle for the main sensor unit. Both the sensor unit and the sensor strips connect to it and can be placed between box springs and mattresses. It would also work on your upholstered bed frame.

Got it. Another question: I wouldn’t want to place main ESP32 unit under the mattress. Am I right assuming that it can be placed elsewhere and then connect with cables to sensors under the mattress?

The main sensor unit (ESP32) mounts between the sensor strips. So yes, it would be under the mattress. The connection between the ESP32 unit and the sensor strips is standard 2.54mm (0.1") header pins, so obtaining longer extensions wouldn’t be too challenging if you’d like to mount the main unit elsewhere.

I see. I’d definitely want to mount it elsewhere. Its not a problem when it falls between wooden slats, but if it sits on top of bed base it will be more likely sensed through the mattress. May be you could add an extension cable to default setup to allow for the main unit to be installed away from sensors for anyone who would want to do that.

What if I use myself a thin plastic strip to glue to the upholstered bed base can I go ahead and buy the version that becomes available in February, or is that strip somehow special that I am better off waiting for it to come out later in the year?

As designed, the sensor unit is designed to screw to a slat and overhangs it to keep the profile very low. The mount kit will mount everything together to the plastic strip, and the USB-C cable will be the only thing that routes off of it. Unless you have an extremely thin mattress, it’s going to be very hard to feel it’s existence.

If you would like to create a surface that the sensor strips can adhere to and make customs cables to mount the main unit elsewhere, that should work fine.

Hey everyone! I’m looking for some feedback on when to open sales again.

New stock of our sensor unit PCBs are still estimated to arrive in early February. However, the sensor strips are backed up and arriving in batches all throughout February.

My question is this. Would you prefer I wait to start sales until I have enough stock to fulfill expected orders (~beginning of March), or open sales back up at the beginning of February with the understanding that orders will ship in order as parts become available (but may take up to a month to ship)? Thanks!

my 2c worth would be to wait because you only upset people
