I just got into the HA game and am loving it. I was trying to keep it simple while I got used to the world of possibilities, but my wife left the garage door open a few nights ago, leading to our furnace breaking on the coldest night of the year. With that in mind, I want to hook our garage door to a smart controller so I can automate notifications and such so it doesn’t happen again.
I have a 3 car garage with a pair of Genie 2028 openers. Genie seems to provide their own controller called the Aladdin but it doesn’t look like I could integrate that within my HomeAssistant setup. What is the best open-source option out there to achieve this?
@garadget came to this site to seek help in getting a component setup to integrate with HA and actively replies on this site. When I got mine I inadvertently damaged the USB connection. A few PMs with the owner and I sent my unit back. They cross shippped as to minimize downtime. Since its been installed its worked great. Both the app and HA integration work great.
I put a zwave door sensor on mine to let me know if it is open vs closed and then used a zwave contact switch wired to a remote opener that is triggered with a momentary automation. Probably not as pretty as @silvrr 's setup but I had almost everything lying around.
That looks like exactly what I’m looking for. I am not a fan that each request is not done locally but rather through their web servers, but they are allegedly working on that so I’ll take a leap. Thanks for the suggestion.
I was going to do something similar but hardwired (I have stayed away from z-wave) but got lazy and didn’t want to run the wires. Garage doors a really simple, any relay and a sensor can reliably operate one.
Yeah I didn’t love the “cloud” aspect of it but its hard to find an open source wifi option.
There is good instructions on here to use a rPI to build a garage controller that can work on multiple doors. It used MQTT to talk to HASS and works well. You can expand it as needed with other functionality. Fun project.
I bought a Chamberlain MyQ (add-on unit) a few years back and it integrates fine with HA, with a bit of tinkering. If I had it to do all over again, I would go with one that has an open API, like Garadget.
