Best practices for multi room audio (software + hardware)

I read about the audio streaming capabilities in HA that have significantly been improved in 2022… I would like to builid an open source multi room audio setup, and I am a little lost with all the possible options:

  • esphome vs. squeezelite (I have a single prototype esp32+i2s running with esphome)
  • snapserver
  • owntone

Do I need an additional software like snapserver or owntone or can the recent improvements in HA also provice multiroom audio? Are there any “best practices” regarding devices (just stick to one type or mix AirPlay, Chromecast, Squeezelite devices) and server software components?

I don’t need anything fance, just playing local MP3s and some web radio stations.

So here’s another option.
I got myself some Arylic devices which use Linkplay to communicate. Usable for streaming music with Deezer, Spotify etc. Works nicely across rooms. Doesn’t need any additional software but haven’t got time to set it up properly in HA though :sweat_smile:
