Better alternative to Sonoff Zigbee Dongle E?

I have this SONOFF ZB Dongle-E Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle Plus and while it works fairly well with HA (Z2M) I need to update the firmware to the latest Ember type. I am spending a LOT of time trying to do this and so far nothing is working. I think it would be a better idea to dump the thing and get a unit that allows easy updating of the firmware. I am using Zigbee2MQTT. I don’t mind repairing everything (only 30 or so devices so far!)

I got it off Aliexpress for about $30 and it came in the Sonoff box and looks like the real item, but I suspect it is somehow different as none of the flashing methods I have tried works (or it could be me, of course!).

Some posts (but from 2 years ago) seem to indicate that the P version is better for Z2M but as far as I can see, all that Aliexpress is selling is the E variant (like mine).

I am rather keen on the SMLIGHT SLZB-07 USB stick as it has onboard firmware flashing. After all the time I have spent with this Sonoff, that alone seems a great bonus!

Any tips in this area appreciated.

Hi Kerry,
Did you try this?

Yes, I did. I have the addon installed, but I used the Silicon Labs version, not the version you listed there. Unless I have it wrong, the cc2652 stuff is for the P version? I put the details of the log in the other post in this section.

I just saw the other message, but must have got here first. Sorry and sorry it didn’t work.

Yeah. I have read SO MANY posts and videos, all with different versions, different firmwares, etc. It is so confusing. I am pretty tech savvy (was a hardware engineer and now a software developer) so it is a bit humbling to be so bamboozled by what should be such a simple thing. I mentioned the SMLIGHT option above - that seems to be an answer as it gets away from the huge confusion with Sonoff stuff. Mind you, will have to re pair everything, but I had to do that when I went from ZHA to Z2M anyway.

Am thinking to get a P version AND the SMLIGHT dongles. Surely then one will work? They are pretty cheap, so no real problem there. Like most people, I just want it to work!
