Better to get a Zwave lock or a HomeKit one that connect to HA via HomeKit bridge?

I have mostly Zwave devices in my home but also have a bunch of HomeKit only or Alexa only devices that are bridged to home assistant.

I’m replacing my old Schlage Connect Zwave lock due to reliability issues and am looking at the Yale YRD256 deadbolt.

It comes in two variants: HomeKit vs Zwave.

Am I better off with a zwave version to go direct to HA then expose it to HomeKit like I’m soing with my other devices? Or should I go with HomeKit version then Bridge to HA?

Wondering if there are pros im not seeing or going the HomeKit route.

I’d prefer zwave which is totally local and not stuck with apple’s ecosystem that can be changed on their whim. Zwave is also very secure and used extensively in professional security system installs. It’s also a much more universal protocol which will work with many different hubs/systems.

A Schlage Sense deadbolt was our first bit of smart home automation technology, selected because HomeKit integrated with our iPhones at the time. After several years, with Apple finding new ways to break Homebridge compatibility too many times, I gave up. Now, we still have the Schlage Sense lock, but don’t use it with Home Assistant or iPhones. Not worth the trouble.

The HomeKit integration on those is bluetooth which isn’t support by HomeKit Controller. Go with the z-wave option.
