Turned out that those binding error messages are in result of device timeouts that in my case happened because of low battery. Once I’ve replaced the battery with the fresh one the device was able to successfully pair without errors. So, lesson 1: have a pack of replacement batteries near by. Now, I did check the battery with a multimeter when troubleshooting and the voltage was totally normal 3.1V (coin lithium battery). Apparently it’s not enough. During pairing a ZB device may draw way more power from a battery than usual and if a battery is partly exhausted it could drop the voltage and disconnect the device during pairing. Such a situation is almost impossible to detect so just have a fresh battery ready to verify if it’s the case. When I installed that battery to another device that was already paired it showed the battery capacity about 8% instead of 100% and that was the answer to my questions: a weak battery.
